DS has red raw nappy rash

twelveminutespast · 23/02/2020 08:41

My poor 10mo DS has a red raw bottom. Sudocrem isn't even covering it because the skin is so raw.

What can I do to help him? It looks so awfully sore. This morning I changed him and let some air get to his bottom as well as putting a bit of talcum powder on.

Feel so sorry for him Sad

Id put nothing on it. I would let it air. let him kick about naked on a towel most of the day. Clean with warm water and cotton wool.
I also used to use a muslin or terry square with no wrap if necessary, but very loose and change after each wee ( the terry quare is much easier to tell if hes weed than a disposable nappy)

dogmothertoanother · 23/02/2020 17:42

We use water wipes and always dry the bottom with cotton wool ( an eye pad so it doesn't molt) Occasionally I use sudocreme but I'm not a fan personally. A bath seems up help if there's been loads of poos. That's when it seems to get red.

Different babies suit different creams. I've heard egg whites work a treat if you can't afford any creams. But the best remedy... Nappy off time.. Banging on creams won't do anything, or at least will take ages to work unless you can get air to bum. Even if you can give it twenty mins at each nappy change it'll make a difference

Just seen the rash. I don't think it looks thst bad to be honest. Looks like contact rash where his pooh has been? Napoy off time will work, but you need to do it consistently

TheNoiseHurts · 23/02/2020 18:00

I reckon that's fungal.

I bet it clears up after two days of canestan.

novacaneforthepain · 23/02/2020 18:08

Op the rash is very mild in terms of how bad they can be, I hope that eases your worries.

novacaneforthepain · 23/02/2020 18:10

@TheNoiseHurts wasn't speaking for them all, I said my midwives

Toddlerteaplease · 23/02/2020 18:12

Mix a tube of metanium with a tube of Vaseline and If you can get some, orobase paste. We used to use on on babies who'd had a stoma reversed as their skin would break down. It worked a treat.

copperoliver · 23/02/2020 18:18

Metanium cream is 100% the best.
I look after children, changed 1000S of nappies definitely the best thing for nappy rash. X

copperoliver · 23/02/2020 18:21

Sudocreme is a barrier cream I find it okay to keep the wet off but doesn't work if already sore. X

copperoliver · 23/02/2020 18:24

@Colinthedog had a brilliant idea go to the pharmacist and ask them can you have some metanium cream under the minor ailments scheme. X

IceBearRocks · 23/02/2020 18:24

Metanium really shouldn't be used as you cannot remove all the cream at a nappy change so you are just adding another layer ontop of bacteria!
On a very sore bottom you should remove all traces of cream before adding any more ! This comes from our Tissie Viability nurse.
We use an amazing cream called Flaminal Forte which we get from the Dr and can clear up a horrendous outbreak over night!
To clean bottoms use a aqueous solution...warm water with a dollop of aqueous and dry wipes !!! Cleans and cleanses gently !
My DS has fragile skin and is still in pads aged 10.
I'm very experienced with nappy rash
...all I every seem to do is talk about my Ds's arse !

twelveminutespast · 23/02/2020 18:48

My lovely mum dropped off some Metanium. He's had it on but it's still quite red although not as red as it has been. finding it difficult to apply the cream as he squirms away if I touch the area. He's had terrible poos recently so I think it must be that what's causing it

@LoisLittsLover it's super easy, you need a small airtight container and you put two big table spoons of coconut oil into it then pour a cup of boiling water in and whisk it together till the oil has all dissolved then add in your wipes and mix up. I use little muslin squares as I bought lots of cheap muslin and cut it up but you can use any type of flannels or even paper towels. You can also add a couple of squirts of a natural baby body wash if you want them to be scented. The airtight container keeps them fresh.

BellaBellaBelle · 23/02/2020 20:47

If you’ve got any oats in the house you could either whizz them up in a blender or stick in a muslin square and add to his bath? I let my dd sit for a while in a bath of oats and then had her nappy off for a while and it seemed to help.

greathat · 23/02/2020 22:21

Sudocrem is useless. I don't understand how it's so successful. You need metanium, bepanthan is almost as good. If you can't afford it can you talk to hv? Mine gave me some free sample tubes to try, although that was a fair while ago now. As much nappy free time as poss too

milkjetmum · 23/02/2020 22:24

When my dad had this it was due to temporary lactose intolerance after a tummy bug making poop acidic Sad.

So could try lactose free milk for a while (or colief drops in formula milk). Drapolene cream was my favourite and worked fast.

milkjetmum · 24/02/2020 06:55

*DD not dad Shock

TheNoiseHurts · 24/02/2020 17:21

Sudocrem is useless. I don't understand how it's so successful.

I used to think that. With my first two DC it didn't work at all, it didn't soothe or help at all. I relied on Bepanthen.
Then 3rd DC came along and trusty Bepanthen wasn't working, so reluctantly tried Sudocrem and it's brilliant!
So I guess it depends on the baby butt.

Who knew baby butts were fussy?

Rubyroost · 24/02/2020 18:27

Yes @TheNoiseHurts you're right, it depends on baby. Metanium didnt work for my little boy when he was tiny and he had bad nappy rash from newborn. It would come and go with bepanthen and nappy off time. Now he's two when he gets a little bit red ill put some cream on, sudocrem is now fine, but was useless before when he was little. 🤷‍♀️

Rubyroost · 24/02/2020 18:28

In fact I would have been on here sating metanium is useless, but there's one thing I've learnt from these nappy rash threads that it really is horses for courses.

twelveminutespast · 24/02/2020 18:29

Metanium hasn't worked for him. I don't know what else to try now. He's had lots of nappy free time, maybe I should try Bepanthen or just visit the GP?

OP posts:
YukoandHiro · 24/02/2020 18:30

I prefer bepanthen for healing a rash that's already there. The couple of times my daughter has had a really bad blustery rash (due to a dirty nappy being on too long at nursery) I'm amazed at how quickly it improves - almost gone overnight

GammaRays · 24/02/2020 18:33

If you're breastfeeding, breastmilk! Spray some on the rash, it works miracles!

GammaRays · 24/02/2020 18:35

And metanium never worked for my DS either! Only breastmilk and then prescribed cream when he was tiny!
