DS has red raw nappy rash

twelveminutespast · 23/02/2020 08:41

My poor 10mo DS has a red raw bottom. Sudocrem isn't even covering it because the skin is so raw.

What can I do to help him? It looks so awfully sore. This morning I changed him and let some air get to his bottom as well as putting a bit of talcum powder on.

Feel so sorry for him Sad

See a pharmacist; I’ve never met a rash Sudocrem couldn’t handle.

DesLynamsMoustache · 23/02/2020 13:12

Another vote for Metanium. DD had horrendous nappy rash after a couple of days of toxic poops, it was all blistered and looked so painful. Sudocrem did nothing but one overnight with her slathered in Metanium and it was almost back to normal the next day. It smells a bit odd and is like paste (and turns stuff yellow if it touches it!) but it's like magic! If you can gather some loose change together, might be worth a trip to the pharmacy.

DesLynamsMoustache · 23/02/2020 13:13

(And I think Sudocrem is amazing but Metanium blew it out the water for nappy rash)

Do you change him often? A woman I used to know, her babies bum was red raw. I went round to get house a couple of times and everytime, the wee ones nappy was sagging to his knees it was that wet/dirty. Hence why his bum had sores all over it, he was sitting in a wet nappy for hours on end 😥

twelveminutespast · 23/02/2020 13:22

This is the rash. He's been nappy free for as long as possible this morning and it hasn't really improved. Does he need to see the GP do you think?

I change him every 2 hours or so. I never let his nappy get so wet or dirty. The only thing I can think of is that I've recently changed baby wipes so I'm going to switch back.

@Mlou32 Yes I do.

If it’s upsetting him I would take him to the pharmacist or GP. I think the best thing would be to use cotton wool and water rather than any baby wipes. Plus nappy free time. Metanium never helped my DD, it ended up being eczema causing her rash so we use a prescription eczema cream at every nappy change and steroid cream up to twice a day depending how bad she is.

Lweji · 23/02/2020 13:27

As it's so bad, just don't use baby wipes at all at least until it's healed.
Just water. And a barrier cream.

RogueV · 23/02/2020 13:30

No to talc

Only wipe with water no wet wipes!

Metanium for the rash then once it’s better bepanthen after each nappy change

Metanium is on offer in Boots at the moment have you got any points you can use to pay for it

SnugStars · 23/02/2020 13:31

If you don’t have cotton wool you could use water and a flannel or muslins.

takeyourrubbishhome · 23/02/2020 13:40

I think that looks like it could be fungal (I think I can see little white bits towards the edge of the rash). The best thing is Timodene if you can get the GP to prescribe. Failing that, do you have some canesten hc lying around, or some daktarin? Or any other steroid for that matter? Hydrocortisone would be the best to try, and I probably wouldn’t use something like dermovate as it’s very potent, but out of desperation I might give something else a quick go. Put a thin covering on, wait a few minutes, and then the barrier cream (I also prefer bepanthen to sudocrem like other pp but sudocrem should be ok).

twelveminutespast · 23/02/2020 13:42

@takeyourrubbishhome I think the white is residual Sudocrem. It's just been red and raw all morning now gone a bit crusty

I think I'm going to visit the chemist because it's making him irritable. It must be so painful for him Sad

SinkGirl · 23/02/2020 13:42

I would say very likely that’s fungal. When DT2 had fungal nappy rash it looked like this to start with. Any chance you have any canestan cream?

SinkGirl · 23/02/2020 13:43

His had no white bits - just solid red like this then red dots as it spread

MySweetLittleTriffid · 23/02/2020 13:44

Weleda calendula nappy cream. It's a miracle worker. Genuinely. I still keep a tube about as it works on Burns and all sorts. You can get it off Amazon.

My DS was allergic to sudocrem and metaniun never made a difference.

LoisLittsLover · 23/02/2020 13:47

@CMMum88 can you tell me how you make your wipes please

QuestionableMouse · 23/02/2020 13:48

I react horribly to sudocream. Brings me out in a nasty sore rash.

Give him a dose of calpol for the soreness.

PixieDustt · 23/02/2020 14:05

Oh bless him.
It does look very sore. Definitely visit a pharmacist.

PixieDustt · 23/02/2020 14:08

Depending on your location I have half a tube of bepanthen you could have if local

Lweji · 23/02/2020 14:31

Don't expect any quick results. Once the skin is damaged it takes a while to heal.

SinkGirl · 23/02/2020 14:45

I have to say that when DT2 had fungal nappy rash, it improved very quickly once we started using canestan cream. Took a while to clear completely but the redness faded within 24-48 hours.

I was told not to use hydrocortisone on fungal nappy rash, by the pharmacist.

This is how it ended up because we were using the wrong creams. Definitely get advice.

Raera · 23/02/2020 14:47

My friend's DS had similar after he ate banana, it was an allergic reaction. Have you given him something new to eat?

twelveminutespast · 23/02/2020 15:35

@Raera He had banana at my mums on Friday!

Bless him! Agree with all of the above advice. Definitely no talc. Use cottonwool and water. Lots of nappy free time. Metanium is brilliant. Only needs to be spread very thinly. Pharmacist may suggest timodine. My daughter got awful nappy rash every time she was teething.
