DS has red raw nappy rash

My poor 10mo DS has a red raw bottom. Sudocrem isn't even covering it because the skin is so raw.

What can I do to help him? It looks so awfully sore. This morning I changed him and let some air get to his bottom as well as putting a bit of talcum powder on.

Feel so sorry for him Sad

It’s awful when it gets really bad. Google photos of fungal nappy rash - does it look like that? We’ve had it a couple of times.

Ours had almost constant terrible nappy rash and it would bleed until we were able to get dairy free formula. They are still allergic at 3.5

I agree that yellow metanium is good for this sort of thing. If you think it might be fungal or it’s not getting better you could go to the GP and see if they can prescribe something for you.

Do you have any mum friends who might have a tube you could borrow for a few days? A tube lasts ages.

The other things we found helpful were hydromol / epaderm (a tub has lasted us two years, with twins) and there was a spray that leaves a film so that wee and poo can’t get to the open sores (Cavillon or something like that). If you can afford to get a few things they’ll last ages.

LillyBugg · 23/02/2020 09:12

Is there a local Facebook mums group or something you could ask on? I'm sure there are literally hundreds of half used tubes of metanium out there sat in drawers no longer being used. Maybe someone would offer you a tube? I know it's hard to ask but you sound like you need it.

TheNoiseHurts · 23/02/2020 09:12

If no nappy creams work, strongly consider thrush.

Sudocrean is very drying. My midwives don't recommend it. Actually fresh air and no nappy is best

CMMum88 · 23/02/2020 09:18

A thick layer of sudocrem works on my babies, we only use it for very sore bums, I don't think it works as well if it is used all the time. We make our own reusable wipes using muslin and coconut oil which also really helps with nappy rash.

Fresh air is the best healer though so if you continue nappy off time you should be fine.

Lweji · 23/02/2020 09:22

You can use olive oil. It's actually quite good.
I'd get rid of sudocream.
Find another cream or keep to the oil.
Don't wash with soap. Or baby wipes. Just warm water and a soap free liquid or a gentle emulsion.

Crazybunnylady123 · 23/02/2020 09:24

A soothing bath and no nappy.
But I really like sudocrem. Never used anything else on dd and she’s never had much rash. Only a couple of times when she had runny poops. Wash and an air cleared it up quite quickly though. It’s horrible though isn’t it!

yatapina · 23/02/2020 09:25

We had this too OP, it's awful. Dd's turned out to be a skin sensitivity to urine and required steroid cream and anti-biotics to shift it!

To clear it we were told to;
Leave nappy off as much as possible
Run a shallow bath of lukewarm water at changes rather than wiping
Shower off anything stuck to skin wiping with hand only
Apply doctor's cream only (metanium made hers worse)
Leave to air dry before putting on nappy if necessary
Be strict with changes - maximum 2 hourly

Stop putting talc on as that will aggravate it, use minimal cleansing stuff, I ended up buying small pants for her to wear at home instead of a nappy so any accidents would atleast be slightly contained until we spotted it!

katmarie · 23/02/2020 09:32

When ds had horrendous nappy rash the doctor initially prescribed canesten and then when that didn't work, timodene. The timodene cleared it up quickly. If the nappy rash is raw and blotchy it's most likely a fungal infection and will need one of the above creams to clear it up.

Merename · 23/02/2020 09:32

Don’t worry if you can’t afford other stuff - yellow metanium never agrees with either of mine, tried various creams and by far the most helpful thing was nappy off time. I’m happy to clean a few pees on the carpet when it helps them get better quickly. Also agree wash with water at changes rather than wipe, as the skin so delicate when this is going on. Make sure really clean and dry. Sudocrem when putting nappy back on.

Mintlegs · 23/02/2020 09:42

Metanium as other posters have said. Sore bottom seemed to appear when teething

goingtotown · 23/02/2020 09:43

Sudocrem in the grey pot....the antiseptic healing cream.

Shayisgreat · 23/02/2020 09:50

DS gets nappy rash when we use wet wipes rather than reusable material wipes with water. Sudocrem only helps if we change his nappy every hour whereas with bepanthan we can leave him a bit longer in a nappy.

puds11 · 23/02/2020 09:50

Has he had anything new in his diet? This could affect it.

notangelinajolie · 23/02/2020 10:08

No nappy during the day. Bath and gently pat clean when needed.
Persevere with lots of Sudocrem and a nappy at night.
And you could try a different brand of nappies, baby may be sensitive to brand you are using.

rhowton · 23/02/2020 11:07

It may be fungal, we went to docs and they gave us canisten.

whatswithtodaytoday · 23/02/2020 11:12

I would try going to a pharmacy to see if you can get something for free - if you explain you have no money and show them his bottom I would have thought they'd help.

For us metaniun and no nappy work best. He gets nappy rash when he's teething sometimes.

InkogKneeToe · 23/02/2020 11:16

Definitely metanium. It's about £3 a tube and lasts forever.

Do you have any points on a boots advantage card or nectar card you could use? Failing that post a plea on the local Facebook page, I've had to do this before one night when my husband was away, I had a sick toddler and calpol wasn't taking his temperature down. I asked if anyone could spare a dose of infant nurofen (where we live there's no shops open beyond 10pm unless you drive to the next town over) and people couldn't have been more helpful

startrek90 · 23/02/2020 11:35

This sounds bonkers but honestly it works. My great nan suggested it and it's really good if you have no money, a fresh egg white in the nappy. It's weird and I didn't believe her but it bloody worked on my ds

TheNoiseHurts · 23/02/2020 11:52

sudocrean is very drying. My midwives don't recommend it. Actually fresh air and no nappy is best

Sudocrem is a barrier. It prevents the wet causing rashes and breaking down the skin.
If I go even one day without that barrier cream, DS's bottom is sore.

It isn't drying, it can even be used on eczema.

I'm not sure which midwife you're referring to but unless you have some way of asking the opinion of every midwife, I don't think you can speak for them all.....

MegaClutterSlut · 23/02/2020 12:05

Dd had terrible nappy rash and screamed any time I wiped her so In the end I use to shower her bum throughly with warm water and gently pat dried, there was no tears when doing it this way

MuchTooTired · 23/02/2020 13:06

With my DD the only cream that’s worked for nappy rash (and I’ve tried loads!) was calendula nappy cream. That stuff is a bloody miracle worker!

She tried the steroid creams, canesten etc and we ended up getting a referral for allergies - turned out she was allergic to eggs. She’s now 2, and gets nappy rash on occasion now but the calendula cream keeps it at bay.

For pooey nappies, use cotton wool and baby oil to wipe as it’s much kinder on the skin and helps to get it off the skin much faster.

MuchTooTired · 23/02/2020 13:07

The other thing to try if you have any in the house is Vaseline.

drspouse · 23/02/2020 13:09

You can make an appointment with the HV or GP first thing as he's so young and get it on prescription.
He may need anti fungal and metanium together. As others have said, nappy free time today.

Clevs · 23/02/2020 13:10

My son had a red raw bum when he had Hand, Foot & Mouth. It was that bad the skin was peeling off in between his bum cheeks. I got a steroid cream (Canesten) on prescription from the doctors and it cleared up in a few days.
