What have been your best family holidays?

Though their holidays with grandparents in Connemara are the ones they treasure the most

sproutsandparsnips · 22/02/2020 22:54

@BerryPieandCustard one of my most treasured memories of interrailing with DS is him struggling with his luggage on the Paris Metro - lots and lots of steps. His DF had been very clear with him that he had to be responsible for his own luggage, and lots of kind Parisiennes were trying to take it off him to take it up the stairs as he tried to wrestle it back with a firm 'Non merci'. So much for grumpy Paris!

Pack wisely, really think about the best kind of luggage, and schedule stops in places where you can do laundry. Not travelling in cities in rush hour makes a huge difference too.

Poetryinaction · 22/02/2020 23:55

Train to Italy.

BerryPieandCustard · 23/02/2020 00:18

@TeetotalKoala we would normally do public transport but we were on the way back to the UK from visiting my in-laws in another country and had 3 large suitcases. When we didn’t have the rental car in Aman it was great finding our own way about. Also the public transport is somewhat lacking... I hope to visit again in a few years time to do Wadi Rum and Aquaba, hopefully travelling lighter then!

@LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett thanks for the tips, Especially about the laundry! I’m in the south and have always wanted to visit Scotland so I may go by train and schedule a stop for the night mid way as a kind of test run with my daughter and the luggage situation!

Another vote for Efteling. Or Europa Park in Germany. The “Tour around the world” package there, you stay in all the fab themed hotels..

TeetotalKoala · 23/02/2020 00:24

@BerryPieandCustard

Sorry, my post was in response to you saying that you wanted to do some inter-railing and mentioning backpacks.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 23/02/2020 00:26

So many...
As a couple, climbing and walking in the Alps and Germany. With a toddler, a flat in Sennen along with the PILs. Whitesands Bay in Cornwall, before the Tregurrian got pulled down. Duinrell, used to go for a half term every year. Carnac Plage. Iceland when DD was 17, sent on our own as an apology for her teenage years. The house was spotless when we got back. Taking her and her boyfriend to Malta the year before she got pregnant.

TeetotalKoala · 23/02/2020 00:28

@BerryPieandCustard

Nothing against car hire in the slightest. My friend and I went to Santorini a few years ago. Having a car was an absolute game changer and meant we saw so much more if the island. I think your Jordan trip sounds amazing (alas I'd never get DH there, 25 degrees is too hot for his liking).

I started my post a little clumsily, but I was trying to say that I've done train/bus travel in Europe with children (to a small degree).

Shodan · 23/02/2020 00:30

Very cliched but … Disney World, last year.

We've been lucky enough to go several times, but last year was the first time we went without XH. A friend of mine, who is actually closer in age to ds1 (20s) came instead.

Both boys and I agree that it was much more relaxed and fun without XH. No arguments, no silly tantrums about things -just perfect relaxation and fun.

Other than that -ds2 has loved summer holidays in Austria and Slovenia, and the three of us went to France, driving and staying in airbnbs.

Greenbutterlfy566 · 23/02/2020 09:02

When is the least hottest time for disneyworld?

Bluewavescrashing · 23/02/2020 09:15

What age is Europa Parc best for? Looks like there are quite a few bigger rides and water slides? I'd like to go there and also Efteling (separate holidays) and DCs are 9 and 6. Thinking Efteling soon and Europa when they are a bit older.

BunsyGirl · 23/02/2020 09:19

Road trip around Southern California with DS6 and DS9. Much prefer it to Disney World. Also loved the Atlantis Dubai when they were 2 and 5 - nice easy holiday for their ages.

OneEpisode · 23/02/2020 09:20

I would think Efteling then Europa Park. Partly as Efleling is closer by car and older kids will enjoy the autobahn to Europa Park more. Both places have a range of rides and activities. Not many height restrictions but some. Check your eldest can’t do a thrill ride your youngest can’t as this could spoil the mood. Europa Park is the other side of the Rhine from Strasbourg so you can have crossing the Rhine fun in the same holiday..

chocolateisavegetable · 23/02/2020 09:21

Center Parcs (UK)
New York (but when they were older than 7)
Rome (but when they were older than 7)
Mini cruise to Bruges (again, older than 7 though)
The Princess hotel in La Palma (so many swimming pools)
Lots of beach holidays to Pembrokeshire, Wales

chocolateisavegetable · 23/02/2020 09:22

Oh - and I forgot Disneyland Paris!

StSaulOfSnacks · 23/02/2020 09:23

Pointe St Gilles Eurocamp in France.

converseandjeans · 23/02/2020 09:25

Duinrell in Holland - have been 3 times and going again this year
Caravan in Cornwall - our own static which the kids love
Camping - when they were toddlers it was great fun

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 23/02/2020 09:33

Lake Garda with young teens.

Boysnme · 23/02/2020 09:33

We love Disney & Universal in Florida but appreciate that isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and is expensive.

Other than that our next favourite is Duinrell in Holland.

Bluewavescrashing · 23/02/2020 09:59

Thanks @OneEpisode

Shodan · 23/02/2020 15:48

Greenbutterlfy566 I think probably winter months are the least hot for Disney World, but I've never been outside of summer holidays so can't tell you for sure.

In summer holidays though- we've always found the best time to go is the last two weeks of the school holidays. It's cheaper, slightly less busy and although there is a risk of thunderstorms they pass quickly and it doesn't get cold. I personally found the first two weeks of the school holidays to be far too hot and humid, it made the trip unnecessarily uncomfortable.

Next time we go (which won't be for a few years, if that) I plan to try the autumn term half term (ds2 gets two weeks now).

Greenbutterlfy566 · 23/02/2020 16:04

Shodan- thanks
