Gran Canaria next week - what to pack?

Nightmanagerfan · 22/02/2020 11:00

We (me, DH and 11-month-old DS) are going to Gran Canaria next week. I have no idea what to pack for the weather, which is forecast to be 22 during the day and 14/15 overnight.

Has anyone just got back who could help? Is it dress and sandals weather with a cardigan? And does DS need shorts/t-shirts and a few layers?

Thanks so much. I am very sleep deprived, hence have no brain cells remaining for such tasks. Please be kind!

Layers.

Swimsuits, shorts and tshirts for day

Long trousers and a fleece for night

Based on a holiday to Tenerife last Feb/March...we were quite cold in summer wear and ended up wearing jeans most nights. I’d definitely take a light jacket. It is usually warm enough to sunbathe during day, although can be windy at times. There could be rain in February, usually in the form of a rainstorm which lasts a few hours and then it clears up quickly.
Yes, shorts, T-shirts and layers should be fine. Take a couple of blankets for when he’s napping in the pushchair in the shade.

Hello OP - I’m in Lanzarote right at the mo. It’s lovely . So - it’s T-shirt, and shorts weather in the day - but if breezy and cloud covering the sun it can get fresh. Too hot for jeans I’d say. Definitely need a cardi and maybe long lightweight trousers for evening although many people are still wearing summer gear at night. I’ve only used one cardi all week - just a lightweight one really For the evenings. Water is bloody freezing though, unless your pool is heated you won’t be doing much swimming!

You got the calima, Gara ?

Twospaniels · 22/02/2020 12:06

Just back from Lanzarote and it was definitely warmer than forecast. It was 24-25 most days, so shorts and a sun top definitely. In the evenings I was more comfortable with long trousers and a light jacket.
A lot of the restaurants had patio heaters out and also blankets on the chairs for your legs or shoulders.

Troels · 22/02/2020 13:16

My sister lives there and just put this on facebook.
Calima again
We went in the rain one year it was still warm, flip flops and shorts/capri pants and sundresses, with a couple of light cardigans or fleeces.

Nightmanagerfan · 22/02/2020 13:57

Thank you all, @troels that is a worry! We fly on Thursday so hopefully it will have calmed down by the time we get there.

Really useful - thanks all

Ah AnyFucker - that’s why the sky is ominously white today Grin! Up til today it’s been blue skies everyday. Not windy though, and still pleasantly warm.

GaraMedouar · 22/02/2020 14:56

Well no more wind than normal, I always expect a bit of a breeze in the Canaries!

AnyFucker · 23/02/2020 00:05

They are currently having bush fires in Gran Canaria and hurricane category winds in Lanzarote are forecast Shock

GaraMedouar · 23/02/2020 09:43

Aargh - taking off tonight. Fingers crossed 🤞- it’s ok at the moment.

AnyFucker · 23/02/2020 16:03

The airport is closed at the moment Shock

GaraMedouar · 23/02/2020 21:11

All flights cancelled Sad - stuck here for the night now !!!

Pedallleur · 23/02/2020 21:30

Face masks and goggles. It's sandstorm, 130mph winds and Bush fires

Dowser · 23/02/2020 21:55

And we go the week after you
To Tenerife
Yayyy

Dowser · 23/02/2020 21:58

Omg AF
I forgot you were a canaryphile
Weve been through a few calima but never one that’s shut the airport.
At least they are keeping you safe.
Unlike Newcastle about this time two years ago who let our plane take off in a snowstorm which meant 5 minutes into the cloud and we got struck by lightning

AnyFucker · 23/02/2020 22:13

So sorry if you are caught up in this. I am not in the Canaries but I visit Lanzarote 2-3 times a year so am on a forum and seeing all the up to date happenings.

We last went in January and the weather was gorgeous.

I hope you get off soon Gara

GaraMedouar · 23/02/2020 22:31

Thanks AnyFucker - just waiting for the Tui reps to sort overnight hotels and let us know new flight times. Certainly won’t be until tomorrow earliest. Just got to try and find where I put the toothbrushes. My going home packing is randomly shoving everything in the suitcases until each one is full. Bugger! Grin

Nightmanagerfan · 23/02/2020 22:37

@garamedouar hope you get home safely soon. It does look rather dramatic weather.

Hang in there !

GaraMedouar · 23/02/2020 22:56

Thanks nightmanagerfan Smile

Nightmanagerfan · 24/02/2020 09:08

What’s the latest for you @garamedouar ? And is the air quality any better today? I’m asthmatic and am a bit worried about the dust

OP posts:
Nightmanagerfan · 24/02/2020 09:09

Oh and how have you found Tui? All the news articles have angry customers saying they haven’t been as good as other companies

GaraMedouar · 24/02/2020 09:39

Morning Grin - sat on airport floor for 5 hours then got taken to a hotel - just about to have brekkie. Tui were fine, they didn’t have much info either - not their fault. Air quality - I don’t think Lanzarote is worst hit - I can’t see any difference really here to air quality , only a bit, but I think Gran Canaria is worse. A couple of people here wearing masks . Going to get something to eat then hopefully find out the latest on flights home.

GaraMedouar · 25/02/2020 10:30

Hello 👋- finally got home at 4am! Shattered. Kids and I off school/work for another day. But at least we’re back. DS ran out of data on his phone, so had to chat and play some games with me and DD. So, there’s a silver lining Grin
@Nightmanagerfan - I think skies are clearing in the Canaries, I’m sure you’ll be fine - have a lovely holiday Smile
