If you have a Mary, where are you from?

I’m considering the name Mary for my next child, but have heard on MN that it's sometimes used as slang for vulvas/vaginas.

Which parts of the country use 'mary' as slang? And which don't? I didn't hear it growing up in Surrey...

County Offaly, where every second person is also called Mary.

It's interchangeable Grin

Mary for a baby is gorgeous.

TravellingSpoon · 21/02/2020 21:13

I grew up in Essex and that's what we called it, but that was 30 years ago. I dont hear it much round here any more.

CherryPavlova · 21/02/2020 21:15

I know lots of Mary’s. It’s pretty acceptable for Catholics of all ages and from all areas.

It's a contraction of "Mary Hinge" I believe...

You're all wonderful... I was hoping it was something fellow MNers would help with Smile

Born in Surrey, grew up in Berkshire, uni in Leics, short stint in the gulf and now in Essex - I have never ever heard it called a Mary except on MN 🤣 I think you're safe!

timetest · 21/02/2020 21:26

Irish Mary over here.

lostinleaves · 21/02/2020 21:29

News to me, I've never been told my name is slang for that

cstaff · 21/02/2020 21:32

Plenty of Mary's around me in Dublin but it is just their name...

ParkheadParadise · 21/02/2020 21:36

justshutthedoor · 21/02/2020 21:51

North east and I've heard it here a few times

percheron67 · 21/02/2020 21:53

One of my friends calls her fanjo her "Mary". West Country.

CalleighDoodle · 21/02/2020 21:53

Can I check - heard Mary as a name, or as slang for fanjo?

Definitely couldn't use it's as girl's name. Leicestershire / slang!

Ilikesweetpeas · 21/02/2020 22:38

Lancashire here, it's a beautiful name. Only ever heard it as slang for lady bits on mumsnet!

Turquoisetamborine · 21/02/2020 22:41

I call it a Mary here in the North East. Big Irish ancestry round here so that's probably why.

CandyApple1995 · 21/02/2020 22:45

I'm in the North East and all of my female relatives call it a Mary 😂 I was brought up calling it that! I remember doing the nativity play at school and a couple of girls got told off for giggling every time the teacher said 'mary'

Artura · 21/02/2020 22:46

As a GP in Liverpool (but not born here) have had quite a few patients refer to having a "problem with me Mary...".

GrockleRock · 21/02/2020 22:47

Irish grandparent used to call it a Mary.

I thought everyone did Grin

pinkdressinggown · 21/02/2020 22:49

Definitely used to describe your bits in Liverpool!

FunnysInLaJardin · 21/02/2020 22:50

I'm from Leicestershire and a Mary is your fanjo without a doubt.

All the Marys I know are Irish btw.

Its a lovely name though and where I live now, it wouldn't be a problem at all.
