If you have a Mary, where are you from?

I’m considering the name Mary for my next child, but have heard on MN that it's sometimes used as slang for vulvas/vaginas.

Which parts of the country use 'mary' as slang? And which don't? I didn't hear it growing up in Surrey...

Every Mary I know has Ellen as a middle name.

Hoik · 22/02/2020 08:23

There are people here called Mary but it's not a popular name, I only know one and when my cousin was trying to think of middle names for her DD she was put off using Mary because of its slang meaning. Fanny is also used and I've heard Fairy too.

My Granny is called Mary.
Makes me think of bloody Marys

I realise you’re talking about the drink, but I had a moment of thinking that your granny must be a difficult lady Grin

As pp's have noted, it is an often used slang word for vagina in NW England but I know a few Mary's and no one sniggers over their name so it's like there's no equation drawn between the word as slang and the name, if you follow.

It's a very beautiful name, but I love all regal names.

AWaspOnAWindowReturns · 22/02/2020 08:29

Lancs here. Never heard it as a euphemism except on MN. Know plenty of Mary's young and old though - considered it as a name for DD too.

Aquicknamechange2019 · 22/02/2020 08:52

I'm Mary - never heard of the slang term. Glasgow girl here.

confusedofengland · 22/02/2020 09:01

Essex here, also lived in Leicester. Heard Mary used as slang for lady bits only a couple of times.

My mum & nan are both called Mary plus I know an 11-year old & an 8-year old with the name, so still works well as a child's name imo.

PaulGalico · 22/02/2020 09:07

My Mum was Mary - born in 1923 - big Catholic family living in the North West.

Crystal87 · 22/02/2020 09:59

I've heard of it as slang for vagina but not that often amongst younger people anymore. I do like the name but the Marys I know are over 50. I've never heard of a child called Mary.

Mydogatemypurse · 22/02/2020 10:01

I have two irish friends called mary. I live in Cheshire and yes I've heard it referred to as a mary.

SalmonOfKnowledge · 22/02/2020 10:17

I know it's coming back in to fashion (and I like it now, because it will never be as common as it was). Amongst women 75+, one in five women is called Mary. I remember Marian Keyes saying her Mum Mary was going out with her friends - Mary B, Mary D, Bridget-Mary and Anne-Marie. So funny!

If Mary comes back it will be just one of hundreds of names that is popular in a much more limited way.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 22/02/2020 10:38

I'm from NW Lancs and have never heard it used as slang.

My grandmother was a Mary and we long considered it for DD. Gorgeous name.

1066vegan · 22/02/2020 10:39

Grew up in Warwickshire and now living in Sussex. I'd never heard of it as a euphemism before this thread.

Looloobettyboo · 22/02/2020 10:42

My friend calls it her auntie Mary

justshutthedoor · 22/02/2020 10:59

In Liverpool
It's definitely your mary. If never use it to name my child

AndWhat · 22/02/2020 11:00

Scouser here. Know a few Mary’s and have often heard it used as slang for vagina. Never heard anyone being teased about it though

Manon10 · 22/02/2020 11:20

I grew up in the West Midlands, now live in South Wales, am a GP , have 2 daughters, never heard Mary as slang for vagina. I think it’s a nice name (also like Maria)

Aberfalls · 22/02/2020 12:19

Agree with crystal. I'd bet the pp who is a GP in Liverpool finds its her older patients who use the slang term. To test, I asked my teenager if he knew what Mary was slang for and he didn't. And he uses slang a lot!

Twelveroses · 22/02/2020 13:15

I'm a GP - I did my GPVTS in Liverpool and everyone called their vulva/vagina their "Minnie" or their "fairy". Never heard Mary! Now working in the Midlands and don't hear it here either.

user1477391263 · 07/04/2020 14:23

My daughter is Mary. I think the use of "mary" in this sense is something only found in particular households. I don't think it's at all similar to calling your child Dick or Fannie.

Mollymaejonrs · 07/04/2020 14:25

SW here. Never heard the slang

PrincessHoneysuckle · 07/04/2020 14:28

I think Mari is nice pronounced mar- ree.

Cheeryandmerry · 07/04/2020 14:33

Essex, and yes as a child it was your mary. I always assumed as in William (willy) and Mary.

I still like the name. And variants, Mary Ann, Mariella.

x2boys · 07/04/2020 14:34

I have an auntie Mary ( doesn't everyone ?) Irish Catholic family from Cork

hannabarbera · 07/04/2020 14:43

I don’t know a Mary in Wales there are lots of Mari.
