If you have a Mary, where are you from?

I’m considering the name Mary for my next child, but have heard on MN that it's sometimes used as slang for vulvas/vaginas.

Which parts of the country use 'mary' as slang? And which don't? I didn't hear it growing up in Surrey...

Irish here and my friends from Dublin call their bits their Mary.

SalmonOfKnowledge · 21/02/2020 23:01

I'm in Dublin and I've NEVER hear Mary used for vagina, what the heck- .

Fionnuala is a vagina. Everybody knows that.

OverByYer · 21/02/2020 23:02

South Wales , Mary is also used here as well as Foof.

I’ve heard it used as a name and euphemism in Oxfordshire, generally among the over-seventies though.

MyNewBearTotoro · 21/02/2020 23:07

I know a couple of primary-school-aged Marys in Wales. I’ve never heard it used as a slang name like that.

MadeForThis · 21/02/2020 23:07

Belfast friend calls hers her Mary.

snowplop · 21/02/2020 23:10

I've heard Mary for fanjo occasionally in Leics.

Khione · 21/02/2020 23:12

The only time I ever heard it was on 'One Born Every Minute', when they were filming in Liverpool.

confusedandemployed · 21/02/2020 23:13

I'm South Wales, never heard it called a Mary here. However foof, as per a pp, is very much in use.

I think Mary is a lovely name. If you're unsure, what about Mari or Mairi?

Cattenberg · 21/02/2020 23:15

I’m in Somerset. Obviously I’ve heard it called “Fanny”. I’ve also heard “Minnie” and once, “Rosie”. But never Mary...

MuscatelGrapes · 21/02/2020 23:17

Irish and I have never heard anyone called their vagina a ‘Mary’.

Atilathehunter · 21/02/2020 23:20

Everyone my parents generation in Ireland is a Mary, first name or middle name. I know 2 men whose middle names are Mary. If I met a child called Mary, it wouldn’t occur to me to think of a vagina. I have heard it called a mini but I personally never use slang to describe it. Until I started using mumsnet I’d never heard it referred to as a fanjo either.

MrsFriskers · 21/02/2020 23:25

I’m Essex. Never heard of this; my youngest daughter and oldest aunt are Mary.

Hoik · 21/02/2020 23:33

NE England here and have definitely heard Mary used as a name for bits.

EvilTwins · 21/02/2020 23:36

I'm in Gloucestershire. I'm a teacher and taught a lovely girl called Mary last year (she's 19 now) Never heard of it as a euphemism. She certainly didn't get teased.

EndIsNigh · 21/02/2020 23:44

Liverpool here and contrary to a PP, never heard or used it as word for fanny.
Big catholic family and loads of Aunty Marys. If it's not a first name, it's their second name.
Know a young Mary, about 11 now, and always liked it for her. Seems quite cool somehow.

CrocodileFondue · 22/02/2020 00:13

Yorkshire, never heard it used as slang for anything except perhaps Mary-Johanna for marijuana but that's pretty out-dated now.

I only know one young Mary, she will be about 10 now I think.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 22/02/2020 00:49

Heard is used as a euphemism for lady bits

Taytocrisps · 22/02/2020 07:50

I'm Irish and I know millions of Marys. It's quite an old fashioned name though. You never hear of a baby Mary these days.

I've never known anyone to use it as slang for anything - it would be pretty insulting to all the Marys. Not to mention confusing.

Taytocrisps · 22/02/2020 07:52

Fionnuala is a vagina. Everybody knows that.

Really? Shock

DinosApple · 22/02/2020 08:01

Another Catholic here too, I know loads of Mary's but never heard anyone call their vagina one.

MIL, DM & SIL are all Mary, as are 4 of my mum's school friends. DM always thinks I know which one she's talking about 😂. It's a great name. We're home counties/east.

Knitwit99 · 22/02/2020 08:03

So in areas where it is used for vagina, is nobody actually called Mary then? Are there entire parts of the country with only vaginas called Mary and no actual people?

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 22/02/2020 08:09

Never heard of the fanny thing in london.
My Granny is called Mary.
Makes me think of bloody marys.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 22/02/2020 08:09

And Jesus' mum of course.

Callingyounique · 22/02/2020 08:11

My Nan was from Derbyshire and called it a Mary and as you got older a hairy Mary! So it’s a name I would avoid.
