Dartford Crossing

I remember from reading on here that there are no longer any toll booths at the Dartford Crossing. As it is many years since I last used it I would like to know what is the best way to pay. I have had a bit of a google, but it isn't clear which websites are genuine. I am driving down tomorrow BTW.

Use gov.uk and set up an account, makes it easier.

The gov.uk one

The gov one PP has said.

Please be aware if you dont pre-pay you have 24hrs after you've used it to pay. My OH got caught out by this and was fined.

I found the easiest thing to do was to set up an account to take the payment automatically. I don't trust my memory to remember to make the payment when I reach my destination. I forgot once just after they took the barriers away. Thankfully it was all new at the time and because they took too long to send me a penalty they waived it!

This has, however, reminded me to log in to my account to update my card details as it's expiring next week!

Thanks all. So, it is worth setting up an account even if I only cross it once or twice?

There's signs along the M25 as you approach it telling you how and when to pay. You've got until midnight the following night online.

HopeYouStepOnALego · 21/02/2020 16:49

You don't have to set up an account if you're using it very infrequently but an account will take payment without you having to bother remembering. If no account, you must remember to pay otherwise you'll get fined.

I will create an account then. Depending on the traffic I might go round via Heathrow, but it's better safe than sorry. Thank you everyone.

I live near there. It’s going to be very, very windy here tomorrow so you might find the bridge is closed. If it is the tailbacks will be horrendous. I’d plan another route as a contingency.

Ginfordinner · 21/02/2020 17:30

Thank you for that. I need to be due South of London so will take the Heathrow route then.
