As a child what was you looking forward to doing as an adult?

And did it live up to your expectations?

Mine was the food shop. I used to go with my mum and wonder why she was filling the trolley with boring items when she could be buying ice cream and pizzas.

I couldn't wait till I could buy my own food.
Safe to say I soon realised it wasn't all that fun and planning weekly meals for 5 on a budget is a headache.

Mine was having bank cards! My dad travelled a lot with work and used to bring his hotel keycards back so that I could keep them in my purse, along with his old AA membership card. My sister had a toy post office and I would always make my purchases with a copthorne room key even though the cash til had a whole set of plastic money..... My mum also got me a blank ASDA reward card that I could pretend to use, I was a very forward thinking child!

Now the bank cards are a means to an end and I really couldn't care less about them, child me would be horrified.

When I was really little I remember thinking it must be great to be an adult and be so much taller. I thought it'd be like going on a fairground ride whenever you stood up!

CalleighDoodle · 21/02/2020 08:08

Having my own home. Every month companies just want my money

TeddyIsaHe · 21/02/2020 08:09

I was thinking about this in the shower yesterday!

Mine was I was going to eat salads all the time 😂 That didn’t work out quite as expected.

I still get a giddy feeling now in my 30s when I take dd to nursery that I’m actually allowed to have a house and a toddler and no one to tell me what to do.

BlueBirdGreenFence · 21/02/2020 08:15

I always dreamed of having a mobile phone that I carried for work and my own desk. Thought it was a sign of being really important. I now spend a fair chunk of my time wishing I could fuck the phone out a window...

Stompythedinosaur · 21/02/2020 08:16

Having as many pets as I like. It has totally lived up to my expectations.

Sparklingbrook · 21/02/2020 08:16

My Mum was very strict about sweets and chocolate. Dad would bring home a chocolate bar for each of us on a Thursday night and that was it.
When I walked home from school my friends would buy a '10p mixture' of sweets (with or without bubbly) but I wasn't allowed to do this.

I also quite fancied my own book of Green Shield stamps.

I promised myself that as soon as I was a grown up I would go into the newsagents and buy one of every sweet and every chocolate bar. I still haven't done it. Grin

Nothingfallingdowntoday · 21/02/2020 08:19

I wanted to eat cake batter. I thought I would just not bother to bake the cakes when I was an adult as cake batter was so much nicer.

HandsOffMyRights · 21/02/2020 08:20

Driving. I never understood why my parents were fed up of driving to places.

I thought when I had a car it would be exciting to drive everywhere and give my friends lifts all the time.

undercoveraessedai · 21/02/2020 08:20

Signing things with a signature 🤣 it's not as exciting as I expected unless I'm signing for a parcel.

Freedom from school and later employment - that has been everything I dreamed of and more!

Having colourful hair - I can't now imagine ever going back to normal colours Grin

Jamhandprints · 21/02/2020 08:23

Having a lovely clean house with flowery curtains.

I would still like that!

hereiamagain84 · 21/02/2020 08:25

Being able to buy whatever I wanted at the supermarket. Even as a teen I wondered why we couldn’t get Pringles, sweets, pizza for dinner etc. I actuallly did this when I went to university and soon put on around 2stone! That and all the cider lol. Also being able to eat sweets/biscuits etc before dinner as my mammy always said “that’ll ruin your dinner” I still do eat something before dinner - just because I can lol youd think living on my own the last 14 years I’d have grown out of this!

Kelsoooo · 21/02/2020 08:26

Having my own house and keeping it exactly as I want - has 100% lived up to it.

Having my own pets - not done yet.

Choosing meals - sure it's a ballache and I resent the mental load at times, but....that satisfaction I get when my girls get really excited by the most...normal of meals, is the best. Seeing their faces excited because it's "mummy's steak pie" or "daddy's lasagne" is awesome

Also, funnily enough, the days I say to the kids " go on then, you choose" cause mum never said that, love it. We let them choose the meals for an entire week, and then organise the shopping list. Absolutely amazing, we had some bizarre meals (pesto pasta with chips and baked potato was .... interesting) but they loved it. And I loved it.

Shamazing · 21/02/2020 08:26

Wearing high heels like my mum. I couldn't bloody wait.

I remember on my very first day at work (age 16) I wore a pair of pink suede high heels, despite many many warnings from my mum that it was a very bad idea. By the time I even got to work I was nearly crying with the pain of these ridiculous shoes. 😂

I'm 53 now and very rarely wear heels, I'm all about comfort and practicality these days.

HollysBush · 21/02/2020 08:29

Using the oven to bake cakes, big roast chicken and potatoes. Mum was too anxious to use the oven more than a couple of times a year and couldn’t cope with the mess of cake making. Love it.
I dreamt of having my own border collie. When I met dh, this was his dream breed too. We’ve had two so far, love them, but I’m not the perfect dog trainer I thought I’d be!

YouJustDoYou · 21/02/2020 08:30

Being free.

BillywigSting · 21/02/2020 08:46

The food shop here too.

While it is mostly a chore I do actually get a bit of a giddy feeling looking at my fridge full of delicious food that I have bought with money I earned as a real Genuine Adult™ and not a carton of disgusting rice milk in sight.

And if I want cake for breakfast and pizza and ice-cream for tea i can have it. So it did live up to expectations.

My mum is a nurse and I always thought her uniform was very smart and grown up. Now I also work in healthcare and have a uniform but it's a total pain in the arse, mostly because it creases if you look at it funny and I hate ironing. I have been glad of it quite a few times though when other people's bodily fluids have been involved.

I also thought perfume and make-up were very grown up and sophisticated. My extensive perfume collection can attest to the fact that the right one can really put you in the right frame of mind (have one for work, every day, nights out, days out etc). Not a fan of the make-up though.

I thought going to work looked fun too, with special 'work clothes' (df is a scientist, chemistry, so I thought his lab coat and safety goggles were the bees knees) and interesting stories to tell when I got home. I learned very quickly how much that depends on your job. Luckily I am now one of the lucky few who actually loves their job. The pay isn't great but it's very satisfying.

Adulthood has its downsides but I don't think I'd want to be a kid again. Yes there is more responsibility (and far more cleaning than I consider reasonable) but there's also so much more freedom.

It's infinitely preferable to being a teenager which feels like the worst of both worlds.

Jobseeker19 · 21/02/2020 08:48

Yes!
Doing my own food shop and no homework.

Everytimeiseeher · 21/02/2020 08:49

Getting to stay out late. Now I can’t get home and in my pjs quick enough Grin which was my absolute worst nightmare when I was young as I always had to be in earlier than my friends were.

BillywigSting · 21/02/2020 08:50

@Nothingfallingdowntoday most of my cake batter doesn't make it to the oven Grin

SaskiaRembrandt · 21/02/2020 08:54

Going to bed at any time I chose. It's been pretty good, although I do sometimes find myself wishing I could go to bed at 7.30 and just read.

Onetwothreeeee · 21/02/2020 08:55

Eating as many sweets as I wanted to

Aureum · 21/02/2020 08:59

I wanted to eat cake batter.
Me too! My mum used to let me lick the spoon, and I would think that when I grew up I’d just eat it all and not cook any of it.

sashh · 21/02/2020 09:02

Picking clothes I liked and that were comfortable.

Not having to go to school.

Not having to live in a house full of cigarette smoke.

Hoolajerry · 21/02/2020 09:08

Getting post.

Yeah that's a bit shit. It's only ever junk and bills.
