As a child what was you looking forward to doing as an adult?

And did it live up to your expectations?

Mine was the food shop. I used to go with my mum and wonder why she was filling the trolley with boring items when she could be buying ice cream and pizzas.

I couldn't wait till I could buy my own food.
Safe to say I soon realised it wasn't all that fun and planning weekly meals for 5 on a budget is a headache.

Staying up late. Now I love an early night!

TravelDreamLife · 21/02/2020 11:33

Control the tv remote. My mother was/is a champion channel surfer.

Unfortunately DS (7) is practicing to compete for the championship title.

PsychoWiener · 21/02/2020 11:35

Going to the pub. We were asked this in class when I was 8 or 9 and that was my answer. Everyone laughedBlush

AmazingGreats · 21/02/2020 11:53

I was looking forward to driving everywhere (I still don't drive).
Eating a whole tub of Ben and Jerry's when I wanted to (no wonder I'm overweight)
Getting drunk at parties (I am teetotal after being a chaotic binge drinker and do not go to m/any parties)
Working in an office on a laptop, having lots of credit cards, wearing a suit but never wearing a uniform again. Probably as a journalist or a top barrister. (I have never worked in an office, defaulted on my only credit card, have never worn a suit, and all my jobs have involved some kind of uniform. I am definitely not a journalist or a barrister).
Having an interesting social life (more nope).
Getting tattoos whenever I wanted (can't afford them, can't get visible ones for employment reasons).
Travelling the world on British airways (travelled most of the Uk on railway)

I was also not going to have kids, holiday in the Caribbean for a month each year and have a gorgeous husband who was a Doctor or something. None of that came true either.

I think I was sold a crock of shit tbh.

RollingDownTheRiver · 21/02/2020 11:55

Another one who wanted to eat all the cake batter but so far I still haven't. I do leave lots in the bowl to scrape out although I have to share with the DCs.

CheerfulBunny · 21/02/2020 12:13

I can't believe someone else mentioned putting petrol in. It still makes me feel like a grown-up. I like walking about, jangling my keys with authority... actually having to pay for it, not so much.
I couldn't wait to learn to drive. I used to think when I'm grown up I can just get up in the middle of the night and drive to Scotland if I want. I'm not sure why it was always Scotland Grin
And high heels. I still love them and I've got loads so I'm winning there.

SmellyBeard · 21/02/2020 12:34

Owning cats! My mum can't stand them.

thesnailandthewhale · 21/02/2020 13:01

Buying Garibaldi biscuits instead of boring Rich Tea or Malted Milk.

SaskiaRembrandt · 21/02/2020 13:06

Oh yes, getting a cheque book. I was thrilled when I got one - never used it. I did have a job once that required me to write cheques (in the last few years), the manager had to show me how to do it because I didn't have a clue. I did feel very important and grown-up though Grin

I wanted to have an untidy bedroom

My dad used to go absolutely mad if my room was untidy - I’m talking beatings, and destroying my stuff, even once throwing all my books away. I longed to be able to live how I wanted to.

I’m now 48, and my bedrooms tidy. It’s amazing what a difference having a whole house to keep my things in, and adequate storage makes.

I’m not very tidy, I never will be, and even now if anyone raises their voice, my first instinct is to start tidying up, but it’s clean, and I know where everything is. Mostly.

SutterCane · 21/02/2020 13:32

Having dogs. I was absolutely obsessed with them and spent my entire childhood absolutely desperate for one.

I’m still every bit as obsessed with dogs and currently have four. My life pretty much revolves entirely around them and it’s every bit as awesome (even more so in fact!) as I dreamed it could be Grin

SheepSocks · 21/02/2020 13:47

I wanted to fill out forms - now I weep whenever I'm forced to do one.

I thought I would love to do the ironing, in reality I've ironed once in the last 4 years.

I did however get my own cat, I'm on cat v2 now and they have both been fabulous.

Surfer25 · 21/02/2020 13:53

Not being poor.

Going to university and making something of myself in a good career rather than living hand to mouth on benefits and having my self esteem.in the gutter because I was embarrassed of my clothes and couldn't invite friends home to the dump I live in.

Now though I managed it. But I still feel guilt buying anything expensive for myself.

Mrsmartinkemp · 21/02/2020 14:15

Having a baby

tobee · 21/02/2020 14:23

Driving and going to pubs I'm afraid! GrinBlush

I wanted a sports car, an MG Midget!

Still like diving and the pub (not together obvs!) but have a sensible car.

Sally99 · 21/02/2020 14:29

Getting married, having lots of babies and living happily ever after.

I could not see the point of school from a very early age and sadly the importance was not conveyed to me.

TheDogsMother · 21/02/2020 14:34

Going to bed whenever I want
Having paperwork
Wearing makeup
Watching TV channels other than BBC. I thought ITV didn't work in our house !
Wearing high heels.
Not the stuff of aspiration is it ?

iklboo · 21/02/2020 14:39

Voting and going out for nice meals whenever I wanted.

AgeLikeWine · 21/02/2020 14:48

Definitely driving. As a child, I was as car-mad as any boy. I had my first proper lesson on my 17th birthday and loved every minute of it. 🦆 to 💧 Grin.

The day I passed my test and went out on my own for the first time was a huge landmark in my life. I still love the freedom and independence that comes with being able to drive, and it’s great to be able to afford a decent car.

EscapeTheCastle · 21/02/2020 15:41

If anyone remembers the opening credits of the TV show Mork and Mindy - that's how I wanted adult life to be like. Driving a blue Jeep on the mountain roads and living with Robin Williams.

BossAssBitch · 21/02/2020 15:43

Having a cool car Grin

Being comfortably off (my parents struggled financially during my childhood)

Owning two dogs

Living in a gorgeous house in the country

I did it all Smile

BossAssBitch · 21/02/2020 15:44

@SutterCane

Having dogs

I’m still every bit as obsessed with dogs and currently have four. My life pretty much revolves entirely around them and it’s every bit as awesome (even more so in fact!) as I dreamed it could be

Wonderful isn't it Grin

dustibooks · 21/02/2020 15:45

Reaching my 18th birthday, so I could finally let go of the fear of being taken into care again.

ZeroFucks · 21/02/2020 15:51

As a young teenager I wanted my own office with a phone, I wanted to wear suits to work, I wanted to work on a computer, I wanted to be important enough to get coffee on my way into work and drink it walking along the street, I wanted bank cards, and I wanted my own set of keys.

I also wanted my own bachelorette flat (can still see it my head now) which would be on the top floor of a swanky city centre London apartment block, to which I would bring my string of high-powered men for flings after they treated me to a very expensive meal out followed by bumping and grinding in a nightclub.

Sooo....

  • I have my own office but it's bloody freezing so I work at home as much as I can
  • I have my own phone in my office but I don't bother answering it because I want everyone to leave me alone
  • I work on a computer and I'm blind as a bat and have a permanent eye-twitch
  • I am important enough to buy coffee on my way to work but I fucking hate coffee, I couldn't walk along the street without spilling it everywhere, and it's fucking expensive. I bring my own Tesco Value teabags to work
  • I have bank cards because life
  • I have my own set of keys because life
  • I live in a 3-bedroom Victorian terrace in the suburbs of a city which isn't exactly vibrant
  • It's been about 15 years since my last fling and the thought of one fills me with dread
  • I hated nightclubs from my first experience of them at 15
  • Bumping and grinding is most likely to lead to a slipped disc now rather than a night of anonymous passion
Mintjulia · 21/02/2020 15:52

Leaving home. Yes it was brilliant Smile
