Started a new job in November working for a public funded body. So not a civil servant but similar. It’s been recommended I join a trade union but there a five to choose from and I’ve no idea which one is best. I’ve looked at all there sites and they all seem to offer more or less the same.

Anyone got tips on either a union or things I should be looking for? Otherwise I’ll probably end up just joining the cheapest.

Speak to your colleagues, find out their experience of union support. X

Go for the one that represents most people your grade and role. Unison for example probably has a larger proportion of members who are admin, whereas GMB traditionally was the union for manual workers.

I'm a member of Prospect, which would seem to fit with your description of the job. I feel like my membership fee's worthwhile. Could be useful to find out which one's most represented in your organisation though. I'd want to choose one with at least one rep in my organisation.

They all have a ton of reps at my organisation. Like I say the main benefits all appear to be the same. The benefits of the public and commercial services union look like they may swing it for me. Thanks!
