Gas meter call

Gas meter reader called today. No company identification, just a photo card that had his name on and 'meter reader' on it. I'm guessing that this is because they contract out. It was partly because dh changes the utility companies so often, I forget who we are currently with. I also had dcs with me today and I just didn't want to let him in. We usually just give our own reading. It seemed off. I'm guessing everyone is going to say YABU...?

Did you find the details of which company you are actually with and call them to check if they's sent someone out? I too wouldn't let someone in without proper ID and when you normally provide your own reading.

I declined a meter reader last month - I’d only switched to a new supplier 2 weeks earlier and had sent photos of the meters to show readings (which new company have ignored!!) then. I will be putting readings online myself for the next few months so really couldn’t be doing with a meter reader too!!

Its not a bug deal. Just say its not convenient and ask them to give you a card. Then read it yourself and either ring it in or leave the card in a window where they can see it the next day.

I do it all the time, most of them don't mind

Thanks for your responses. My teens were bothered by the expectation. So many companies are able to send texts when they are due to drop a parcel/provide a health service/provide a fitness class. It seems about time that utlility companies who demand immediate and unannounced access to homes should at least do this?
