We've discovered our daughter has been gifting money on tiktok. £2300 has left her dad's account. Has anyone had any success in getting the money back ?

Can I thank you for bringing this to my attention OP? My kids aren't on TikTok but if DD12 asked me I would have considered it until this! DD9 is on Roblox right now, next to me and I shot over to check my back account isn't linked! I wouldn't have even thought about that until this thread. Appreciate your honesty.

Zombiemum1946 · 21/02/2020 11:55

I've only complained to the school about a child assaulting my son. He was punched, throttled and head smacked of the ground. Turned out the boy was badly abused, neglected witnessed horrendous domestic violence and was left with the body of his dead sibling whilst mum went to the pub. The child that was swearing at my daughter was also dealing with a tumultuous home life with daddy arrested for threatening behaviour toward the kids as well as domestic violence, whilst mummy was sectioned. None of that was tiktok, just real life in a house down the street . I'm not minimising tiktok, I'm just also paying attention to other potential threats that have been in much closer proximity . Some threats can't be account closed and switched off.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit, I've also put it up on Facebook mummy pages as i didn't think I could be the only one. I'm glad it helped.

Record box, it may come from a good place but the number of posts criticising me from so many is unnecessary. It's not been so much a discussion as pointed directly at me. Others have said that their children are on tiktok but little has been said to them. This is why some people don't ask for help on a forum that could provide so much support and a wealth of knowledge. I've received some very good advice that has made a big difference for us going forward and for that I'm grateful. I've been as honest as I can and I hope raised awareness of what many may not have known about.

I have been quite clear that I am posting to warn others of the risks. That's the point I was referring to. If you take issue with what people are saying to you please discuss that with them.

I have the app and sit with my 7 yr old on it as there are some hilarious videos.

HOWEVER, I would never allow her to browse alone. I'm ready to swipe through anything that looks vaguely inappropriate. We mainly watch funny cat videos and gymnastics ones.

I am curious though. I've tried to work out how to put settings on it and can't figure it out to save my life NOR can I find anywhere where you would put card details in?!

Zombiemum1946 · 21/02/2020 13:02

When my husband bought an app from Apple store for dd phone at Christmas, Apple retained his card details. It's been a debacle and it was only 6 weeks ago. The accounts are shutdown and reported to the bank and Apple. The back fraud dept are investigating. The influencers involved are ones we watched on YouTube with her. We just didn't know about the gifting option during live stream.

I thought you were getting a hard time OP until you posted this gem.

'The reality is most children are groomed, abused, assaulted and murdered by family members, family friends or those in a position of trust. Yes caution should always be taken with internet access, grooming becoming an increasing danger. As unpalatable as it maybe, the most immediate dangers are much closer to home.'

You know thats because people close to your child have by definition easier access to them? Social media allows similar exposure, regular contact etc hence why online grooming IS a issue and the fact that abuse is less likely to be physical does not minimise it.

Zombiemum1946 · 21/02/2020 14:49

I didn't say it wasn't an issue. I wasn't trying to minimising it hence the close monitoring of what dd watched. Yes I know it's connected. It may have not come across well but I was trying to show that there is danger all around not necessarily via online grooming . We have regular talks about inappropriate behaviour, bullying to/from friends and strangers in all settings. That no-one other than friends are allowed on the account which we monitored. The whole thing is a minefield. I was navigating it with my daughter, we know what she's watched, we've had full access to her phone and read all the messages she received. We were just not aware of the gift option within live stream. We know who she gave the money to, we had previously watched their videos on YouTube with her as well as tiktok. Others have said they weren't aware of it either. I've dealt with it and I've admitted my mistake. I was just looking for help and advice. I'm doing my best to make others aware using other platforms. Due to the very large numbers of kids in my dd school on tiktok, I'll be emailing the school and pta . I'm not asking the school to sort it, just to help raise awareness. Online safety is a key policy for dd school. I'm glad our experience has helped others, it's helped us to know we're not alone.

Tiktok is pure poison. Paedophiles favourite.

Sparrowlegs248 · 21/02/2020 14:56

And this is why there are age restrictions.

Tombakersscarf · 21/02/2020 14:57

A disgusting eBay ad has just appeared as the mid-thread ad for me on this thread - anyone else have it? Screenshot attached. It is awful to think this has come up because of the topics being discussed on this thread Angry

That’s disgusting.

This is an excerpt from an NSPCC report about tiktok released last summer

We know that a worrying number of children are being contacted via livestreaming apps, such as TikTok, by adults who use them as a gateway to groom and harm young people,” said a spokesperson for the charity. “Our research found that that a quarter of 40,000 children (seven- to 16-year-olds) have livestreamed online with someone they have never met, and one in 20 children had been asked to take their clothes off.”

SylvanianFrenemies · 21/02/2020 15:03

My niece (10) wanted TikTok. My brother joined, scrolled through for a few minutes then seriously felt freaked out by what he had seen (kids twerking in swimsuits etc). He was worried about the legality for him, as an adult. TomTom can't be adequately monitored by parents. It is not suitable for children.

Sorry about your money OP. I hope you get it back, and your husband looks into parental controls.

thehorseandhisboy · 21/02/2020 15:10

It's generous of you to continue this discussion OP as this may all be very useful information to lurkers.

I had no idea that you could buy anything on TikTok or that cards could be saved like that.

Did the email account that the TikTok is registered with not receive notifications of money spent?

I hope that you get your money back.

Patroclus · 21/02/2020 15:15

Yeah I had that add before but a few days back when this thead appeared. Reported it.

MichaelMumsnet · 21/02/2020 15:19

Hi @Tombakersscarf and thanks for reporting that ad.
We're blocking it now.

Wonderbag · 21/02/2020 18:54

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit
If it’s an iPhone, like the OP, it is easily avoided
Just switch off in app purchases in your phones settings. It’s in restrictions.
And never give you card details for the App Store - just get the odd iTunes voucher as a treat.
