DIY self catering holiday in the Caribean - anyone done it?

Looking to do something different next year-end of June after exams.

Has anyone booked flights, villa/apartment in the Caribean? I like the idea of trying something new and don't like all-inclusive resort-type holidays.
I'm sure I read on one of the holiday threads about someone on here who did this relatively cheaply.

Yes, numerous times to Barbados. Booked villas on TripAdvisor. I would do the same everywhere but Jamaica, unless you had contacts there who would show you round.

Barbados is top of the list! Any tips on areas?

We have, Antigua, tobago and Martinique. Martinique amazing for food, Antigua not so much. We love it, would never go AI again

I would usually go to the south coast, easy to get around and lots of choice of restaurants from street vendors to higher end restaurants. I also love Holetown, but the area is mostly all inc. Hotels and large villas and a lower key night life. The beaches are amazing.

Avoid the East coast unless you want authentic Barbados, it has some stunning villas and dramatic scenery although not really much for tourists to do. Hire a car and explore, it's very safe, although personally I would avoid Bridgetown at night. I love Barbados, although the exchange rate isn't great at the moment so it can feel expensive. Imported food is expensive, its cheaper to eat local foods such as fish etc. but there is a lot of choice for all budgets.
