Spag Bol - how much pasta?

preponderings · 16/02/2020 11:01

Cooking lunch. We have 1.5 L of bolognese (defrosting it, that's what got me wondering) and now iI'm cooking a 500g pack of spaghetti.
There are four of us.

How much pasta do you cook for a pasta and sauce meal? DS is 10. I assume over the next few years our consumption will have to increase...!

70 to 100 g per person depending on their needs is normal in our house, we are active and not over weight

GreenTulips · 16/02/2020 11:14

Read the packet

DarningKittens · 16/02/2020 11:21

3-4oz each so 14 ish oz which is about 400g I think

We are 2 adults, an 8 and 3 yo and I cook about 250g pasta for a meal. 150-170g between me & DH and 70-100g ish between the children I would estimate.

AmazingGreats · 16/02/2020 11:35

50g for children, 75g for adults, 100g for teenagers or adults with Hollow legs

riotlady · 16/02/2020 12:20

Ive always just measured with my hand- about a 10p piece size bundle of dry spaghetti per person

preponderings · 16/02/2020 12:27

There is no "portion size" on the packet. It gives nutritional info for 100g, tells me how to cook it and best before date. In several languages.

I used to cook half a pack when the DC were small, then it went up to 2/3 a pack, then 3/4 and then they (DH and DS) complained I was being stingy so I started cooking the whole pack. DD only ate the bolo today though and left most of the pasta. Might drop back to 3/4 the pack.

When it's me and the 2 DC, I cook shapes rather than spaghetti and do 5 handfuls.

500g and 1.5l of sauce between 2 adults and 2 children is huge Shock

ParsleyPot · 16/02/2020 12:35

I cook 40g each.

WobblyAllOver · 16/02/2020 12:35

Usually it's 75g per portion.

For me that's far too much so adjust for different appetites.

Clangus00 · 16/02/2020 12:36

If you’re like me, enough to feed the entire village.

delilahbucket · 16/02/2020 12:40

I do 75g for me, 90g for dp (which is what it says is a portion on packets usually) and 50g for DS who is 11. 500g between four of you with all that Bolognese is a ridiculous amount of food.

Howmanysleepsnow · 16/02/2020 12:43

80g for me, dd12 and dh.
60g for ds6 and ds7
100g for ds14

Caspianberg · 16/02/2020 12:45

1.5L of bolognese is a huge amount for 4 people surely?

ReginaGeorgeous · 16/02/2020 12:45

For a pasta meal I always cook 200g, which feeds me, DH and DD who's nearly five.

preponderings · 16/02/2020 12:46

It's 4 serving spoons of sauce each.

TheQueef · 16/02/2020 12:46

If you have a plastic pasta serving spoon the hole in the centre is dried portion measure.
Saw that on telly, you're welcome Grin

GreyishDays · 16/02/2020 12:48

I freeze 600g sauce for five of us. Depends how runny the sauce is what the relative weight is though.
I cook 500g pasta but that’s too much and I freeze a couple of child portions for non-potato-eating child for the days the rest of us are eating potatoes.

catinb0oots · 16/02/2020 12:48

1.5kg of meat? Are you sure? I make spag Bol for 4 with a 500g pack of mince and that's not stingy portions. Oh and about 300g pasta between 4

GreyishDays · 16/02/2020 12:50

She said 1.5l, not 1.5kg. I’m picturing a 1.5l coke bottle. Still seems massive.

PineappleCocktail · 16/02/2020 12:50

I'd cook about half a pack for 4. 4 serving spoons is quite a lot? Try cutting it back slightly and see if anyone notices.

DesLynamsMoustache · 16/02/2020 12:51

That seems big portions to me (and I love a big portion!). We use 500g packs of mince and they do at least four servings of bolognese, more like five, when bulked out with tomatoes, veg, etc. And between 75g-100g of dry spaghetti a person. And some cheese on top!

Okbutno · 16/02/2020 12:54

1.5 l of sauce not 1.5kg of meat.
I just bung in a bit and use leftovers for lunch. There's no way I'm gonna weigh out pasta for us each.

ClutterbuckFarm · 16/02/2020 12:56

We always use 40g uncooked weight each for carbs - pasta, rice, couscous etc.

WobblyAllOver · 16/02/2020 12:56

I do weigh pasta as I got fed up of doing too much and know 100g is now the right amount for DH and I.
