Dr Martens are how much?!

£140 For the regular 1460 black boots in my size! Bloody hell. Used to wear them all the time 20 years ago. They sure as hell weren't worth the equivalent of £140 back then.

And high-top Converse for £55!

I feel old and bitter.

This is why I love having small feet - I bought a pair from the junior range for £70, plus I got student discount on them Grin

cardibach · 15/02/2020 17:20

They last for ever though. Nothing wears out on them. Big investment but on pay per wear you’ll be quids in after the first couple of years.

ChestyNutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 15/02/2020 17:24

I tried some shoes on this week for work.....expensive AND painful! Can’t believe how stiff they were......it’s a no from me!

My last pair lasted me 10 years of constant wear. I only got rid as I accidentally chucked one out when I was moving house.

I've had my 'new' ones for about four years and they are solid. If I bother to polish them they look like new and I've tromped through puddles and along the beach today - the only part of me that wasnt soaked and cold was my feet.

I think my first pair were about £60 so its a huge jump, but still worth it.

IHeartKingThistle · 15/02/2020 17:25

@ChestyNutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire DMs famously need lots of breaking in, to be fair. But then they're your best friend Grin

ReflectiveGingernut · 15/02/2020 17:26

Chesty They are like that until you've broken them in. After that they are very comfortable.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 15/02/2020 17:27

They don’t last forever though. Dd has the shoes for school and yes they last a full school year but the soles are worn and need replacing by the time July comes round.

I remember as a teenager with a part time Saturday job being able to afford multiple pairs of dr marten boots and no definitely not the 90’s equivalent of £140. I wouldn’t have been able to afford it on the £20-30 a week I earned.

SauvignonBlanche · 15/02/2020 17:27

I want a pair for work, I remember when they were affordable. Shock

CottonSock · 15/02/2020 17:27

£65 for size 4 from junior range

SauvignonBlanche · 15/02/2020 17:30

That’s nice, I’m a size 9.Sad

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/02/2020 17:31

I have size 3 feet, bargains galore!

NannyR · 15/02/2020 17:32

I was shocked when I saw the price of them when I was looking for new boots recently - I used to wear them as school shoes in the nineties, I'm not sure how much they were exactly but I know my mum would never have paid that sort of price for shoes for me. My grandad also used to wear the shoes and he certainly wouldn't have paid that much either.

SymphonyofShadows · 15/02/2020 17:32

I have loads of pairs but these days they aren’t made in Northampton, they are mass produced overseas. Have a look at Solovair/NPS, they are handmade by people who worked at the old Docs factory. Similar price but the quality is incredible. They are cheaper at the outlet shop if you can get to Northampton. DH has got some cherry ‘brush-off’ ones, they are gorgeous.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/02/2020 17:37

I have 7 pairs. They're worth the money.

BobbyBlueCat · 15/02/2020 17:37

They don't last half as long and don't fit as well these days either.

I spoke to an old boy in one of the stores and he said that they're not British made anymore and when they started making them overseas they changed the fit of them and they're not as good now.

Still last a lot longer than other fashion brands but not like they used to.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 15/02/2020 17:41

They flippin don't last forever! They are just a fashion shoe now, disposable like everything else.

Craftycorvid · 15/02/2020 17:46

Yeah, since they had a resurgence in popularity, they’ve gone super expensive. Try eBay for second hand ones, that’s where I get mine. Generally not a lot of wear/almost new and you’ll get a decent pair for somewhere between £50-100.

AngeloMysterioso · 15/02/2020 17:47

I paid about £100 for a pair of knee high DMs back in the day. Hardly ever wore them, lacing them up was such a chore!

fantasmasgoria1 · 15/02/2020 17:53

Go to the factory shop near Northampton £179 pair of platform glitter boots for £50

MaxPaddyandHarry · 15/02/2020 17:55

There is an outlet shop at Wollaston, near Wellingborough, but I can't find one at Northampton.
My friend's daughter gets all hers at Wollaston, and although they are cheaper, they still aren't cheap.
I agree that they used to be more affordable. When my daughter went to university in 1994 she bought a red pair and I am pretty sure she bought them with her birthday money.

ThisIsBigMoon · 15/02/2020 17:58

They don’t last very well any more. I love my shoes and wear them to work (school) most days but my previous pair of boots only lasted a year before the sole wore through.

HarrietSchulenberg · 15/02/2020 17:59

They really aren't worth the money and certainly don't last anywhere near as long as they used do. Stitching and sole attachment are the weak points.
Buy a few fakes off Ebay for less money and they'll have the same longevity.

Ebeneser · 15/02/2020 18:05

I bought my first pair of DMs (Made in England ones) in 1995 for £25. I think they were in the sale though. They are still going strong now.

ActualHornist · 15/02/2020 18:08

I can’t get my feet in them these days, they’re so narrow.

They are so expensive - I used to have them for school, the soles would be smooth by the end of the year. Of course my feet were growing so I just got new ones, but can they re-treaded? Is that even a word let alone a thing?!

GorkyMcPorky · 15/02/2020 18:20

Oh DMs. I used to colour the stitching and paint the back panel silver Grin
