Dr Martens are how much?!

£140 For the regular 1460 black boots in my size! Bloody hell. Used to wear them all the time 20 years ago. They sure as hell weren't worth the equivalent of £140 back then.

And high-top Converse for £55!

I feel old and bitter.

I just had to Google and check because I couldn’t believe they were that expensive. They must have jacked up the prices recently.

FWIW this website has them for £120.

They last for ever though. Nothing wears out on them

Not true! My cherry red Made in England are wrecked. I’ve had plenty of wear from them. I have purple, which wrecked very quickly, at least the colour did. My blueberry and black are fine, tho.

Ebay is good for 2nd hand little worn ones.

The Northampton factory shop is no longer the bargain hunter’s paradise of yore. And yes, they’re now made in China. 😥

SanFranBear · 15/02/2020 18:34

I can’t get my feet in them these days, they’re so narrow

I'm lucky as I have friends in Wollaston so visit pretty often. But ^^ - all my pairs come apart at the widest part of my foot after about a year.. still pretty great all things considered but they are most definitely narrower as the countless pairs I had as a late teen/20's were £40 from Shelley's and genuinely did last forever!

As others have said, they really last well. I got a pair of cherry red docs in a size 8, from the outlet store at Wembley, last year. Did all last winter and this one too. Loads of life left in them. Also sometimes their sales are good I got black patent shoes for £70 in the sale, but they're not very comfy but fine for an evening out.

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/02/2020 18:38

Even allowing for inflation they weren’t that expensive back in the 90s.

stickerqueen · 15/02/2020 18:38

Dd wants a pair for school shes already in adult 7.5 and her feet are still growing she been told she can get a pair when her feet stop growing.
I loved my doc martins when I was growing up but my mum was definitely not paying the prices I'm seeing now she was tight.
My favourites where my flowery ones.

DollyDaydream70 · 15/02/2020 18:39

I bought DM shoes for work (hospital worker). I bougt them from schu because my Son's girlfriend got a student discount. With the discount they cost £90, expensive but well worth it. My only complaint is that a couple of the eyelets for the laces have come off. You don't really expect that with DMs, but I have had them for two years so they're not doing too bad.

PorpentinaScamander · 15/02/2020 18:52

I've got 2 pairs
One were my mums in the 90s. I think they were 2nd hand then. They are 1size too big though so I have to wear really thick socks.

The others I bought in the sale about 4 yeara ago. They hurt too much to even break in. They seem to be super narrow Hmm. Ds2 has the same size feet as me though so maybe he can break them in for me Grin

fatbottomgirl67 · 15/02/2020 18:54

There's an outlet shop in Ashford. Bought my lovely DD a pair of rainbow sequined boots for £40. The sequins reverse to silver on the other side. She's made up with them

Somanysocks · 15/02/2020 19:04

I have a lovely rose pink pair I got years ago but can't wear them much as they kill my heels.

How do you break them in if you can't wear them though?

Squidsister · 15/02/2020 19:04

DD wears them for her school shoes. They last about a year. It’s actually the lining that has worn out and the heel wears down. So I don’t agree that they last forever, but she likes them as they are comfy.
She can’t wear the boots though as they are too narrow.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 15/02/2020 19:10

I got a beautiful pair of red patent for DD from eBay, they were £7.50!!! A size 2. They're just gorgeous.

shortsaint · 15/02/2020 19:12

My DMs have a split sole so let in water. Only about 5 years old. I love them and am proper gutted.

Should I complain if they are supposed to last for ages? Is a split sole fixable?

moolady1977 · 15/02/2020 19:12

My black pair were second hand about 6 years ago in fantastic condition but I've decorated, gardened and walked miles in them and now they are totally done for the heels are through the sole is through and the toes are as close to through as can be at the minute I'm just buying cheap lookalikes until I can afford new ones

FruityWidow · 15/02/2020 19:19

They don't last forever at all. They are a total fashion shoes these days and many people think they last for so long because they have a huge shoe collection so they're not worn all the time. I've worn a pair at work on my feet for 12 hrs a day 5 days a week. They crack and wear down in about 2 years.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 15/02/2020 19:23

I got a pair with skulls on them for £80 in the sale

RedElephants · 15/02/2020 19:30

I many many years ago, wore 'monkey' boots..
I loved my monkey boots..
My Dr Martens, I've dug them out, are well over 21 years old, never found them as comfortable as 'monkey' boots tho..
Need to wear them in guess 😆

SpottyShoeBow · 15/02/2020 19:35

Lots of people selling them tried on but not worn on sites like E Bay and Depop. Bargains to be had. Easily get a new in box pair for £60/£70.

winewolfhowls · 15/02/2020 19:36

I've always always triple always wanted a pair but my feet are narrow so they never fitted. Can anyone else confirm they are narrow these days?

Mysterian · 15/02/2020 19:38

They were "student boots" when I were younger. The cheap alternative to "proper" shoes.

Think I'll get some Timberlands instead for half the price.

Word to the wise. Doc Marten's are, by-and-large, now made in the Far East. Solovair shoes and boots are still made in Northamptonshire and are better quality, if not quite so fashionable.

SpottyShoeBow · 15/02/2020 19:42

Does it matter where they are made if you love them?

fleamadonna · 15/02/2020 19:46

I had a pair of solovairs that I totally wrecked. To be fair we are talking 3 or 4 years of CONSTANT wear. Maybe I took them off to sleep/wash but that’s it. The leather was very soft and lovely. I even had them resoled.

I still have several pairs of docs that are very much alive. I am constantly disheartened by how much they cost these days though.

My favourites are my doc marten Kendra boots. So sassy.

JoJothesquirrel · 15/02/2020 20:16

Right, who mentioned Solovair? I cannot cannot cannot ignore what looks like a well made and sensible shoe. I’m drooling over the website. I could have lived my whole life not knowing they existed and now I’m saying things like “quality is always worth the price” “you must look after your feet” and “cheap plastic shoes are terrible on every level”.

damnthatanxiety · 15/02/2020 20:20

£150 would have been around £60 in 1990. I think you are all looking back with rose tinted glasses!
