Just wondered if anyone else has seen him? He said he was wearing a joker-esque suit but with a proper Pennywise mask. And an umbrella. He was walking along going “hah hah!” in peoples faces and then when he got off the tube he shouted “bye bye” at everyone.

with the beggars it depends what time of day you travel and which line. They want to be able to walk down the train so the Central and Northern Line at rush hour won't be popular. The lines with the walk through trains seem to be particularly badly impacted, especially at times when there will be more tourists. I see them at least weekly on the District and Hammersmith and City lines on the central stretches

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 15/02/2020 09:27

The tissue beggars used to be your women, now it's young men, they leave the pack next to you and collect it later.

The women didn't used to say anything, but one young man started looking at you and demanding 50p.

I agree that people don't carry change anymore, and pickings are slim. I know I don't usually carry change because it's easier to use contactless, so if I know I'm going to see the people I usually give to then I must remember to take some.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 15/02/2020 09:28

didn't use

MarshaBradyo · 15/02/2020 09:31

People asking for money is very frequent on the East London overground from SE through Shoreditch.

No clowns though sounds bad. We’re any children scared? (Not sure what yes like)

MarshaBradyo · 15/02/2020 09:36

Just read it was 7.30am I suppose there weren’t many or any children at that time. I’d hate it people invading your space with shouting etc is bad enough.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 15/02/2020 09:37

On the underground I would roll my eyes and consider what deficits in his psyche might require that level of attention seeking. I worked and live in London for a long time and got rather used to this sort of thing.

Saying that, that spate of scary clowns a couple of years ago freaked me out as i used to run at night slot then down a canal path...urgh I used to like to convince myself I'd tell them off for being a twat but in reality I'd probably scream , run hell for leather and be pleased I'd got a new personal best pace. In my head I'm a warrior in reality I'm a bit of a wuss.

I do hope its not the start of crap like that again !

KatherineJaneway · 15/02/2020 09:42

I had a man in a scary mask try and intimidate me on my way home, he wouldn't get out of my way and was making growling noises. I told him in no uncertain circumstances to fuck off and he did. I would never normally shout swear words while out in pubic but he made me really angry by picking on me.

AutumnRose1 · 15/02/2020 09:43

Katherine, was this in London?

ThatsSooooGerard · 15/02/2020 10:03

Was it Reece Shearsmith in character as the psychoville clown Mr Jelly?

Cherrysoup · 15/02/2020 10:12

The funniest thing I ever saw on the Tube was a pigeon that got on, walked up the sparsely populated carriage stopping in front of everyone to check for food. He then went to the door-on the correct side (!!) and got off at Baker Street. So bizarre that he knew which side to go to.

Ceefax101 · 15/02/2020 10:16

I was in London for a few days this week and saw a tissue beggar on the tube.
The one that scared the crap out of me was as we were driving into London through very busy traffic. There was a very old lady, weaving in and out of the cars begging for money. I’ve seen this before but never anyone quite so old. Shame on whoever sent her out doing that.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/02/2020 10:20

DD and I were in Stratford last year and 4 full on Zombie characters ambled by Grin .
It was the last ever ZombieWalk in London , we didn't see any more though .

Jaxhog · 15/02/2020 10:25

I’ve lived in London 20 years and seen beggars in the tube less than 10 times.

I travel to London 2-3 a month and have seen a beggar on the tube every single time. Never a clown though, thank goodness. I hate clowns

HazelBite · 15/02/2020 10:26

There used to be a man who would get on and off the met line at Baker St dressed for a day in the country in "tweeds" and a lampshade frame on his head.

Wolfff · 15/02/2020 10:27

@Cherrysoup
I often used to see pigeons get on the tube at Hammersmith and hop off again at Shepherds Bush or Latimer Road. I saw one once that seemed to panic it had missed its stop at Ladbroke Grove and flew off back along the tube line.

grandemac · 15/02/2020 10:30

Well if he was getting in peoples faces he's definitely at risk from a punch.

HighNetGirth · 15/02/2020 10:33

There are tissue beggars on my Greater Anglia commuter service.

jackparlabane · 15/02/2020 10:33

There's usually beggars on the tube and trains near Vauxhall - the Big Issue headquarters and some large hostels are there.

I don't mind the musicians - much better than the bloke who shouted Don't be a sinner, be a winner! through a megaphone until he was forced off the trains and then stations by court orders, and then forced out of the traffic island by Victoria by sheer weight of pissed-off commuters.

For anyone who's read White Teeth, I got beaten up by Mad Mary once. She was a regular on the Jubilee line north of Baker Street, and covered in red stuff that she was probably blood.

Lordfrontpaw · 15/02/2020 10:33

There used to be a man in a business suit on the central line (morning rush hour) with a telescope. He’d hang out of the doors at the station, peer through his telescope, yell ‘I see no ships’) then get back into the carriage.

The joke was that he was the governor of the Bank of England (pretty sure he wasn’t).

Undies1990 · 15/02/2020 10:40

Tissue beggars are often on Southern trains between Victoria and Brighton. They are harmless; just ignore and don't engage. What I object to are 'homeless' beggars who give a loud ranting speech and demand money, even from16/17 year old students.

I always used to see Sinner winner guy at Oxford Circus outside TopShop every day for a few years about 20 years ago. I had a strange sort of affection for him!

Are the tissue beggars a London thing or are they to be seen on trains outside London as well?

Paris was full of them when I went there a few years ago. They waked down the train handing out cards written in French and English asking for cash Grin.

MethodToThisMadness · 15/02/2020 10:48

Also I once got a late night tube when I was a student back from a gig. This was the second leg tube, so not all gig goers.
The tube car turned into an impromptu party, with people sharing drinks and snacks out and having quite a good time.
