Valentine's Day awkward

quicknamechange80 · 14/02/2020 20:20

Sorry for the name change but I don't want this linked to my usual one just in case.
Super awkward, I live in a small village hamlet, (only relevant in thats everyone know everyone else) I'm in a committed relationship, dp moved in with us a year ago, all good Smile
I'm usually no nonsense and very straight talking but I'm not sure how to handle this sensitively. There's a middle aged single, very nice guy who lives a few doors down, we are on saying good morning and occasional taking in a parcel terms etc but nothing more. I had a large bunch of flowers delivered today, from him, with a happy valentines note. Initially I thought it might have been a mistake, but no, he messaged me to ask if I liked the flowers and if I'd like to go for a drink. He only has my number as there was a village issue a while ago and we needed to contact each other regarding that, this is a new thing.
I don't want to embarrass him but this isn't appropriate, and I need to move on without awkwardness if possible.
How would people handle this, ignore, message back, pop over to see him and explain......?
Thanks.

Just reply and say thank you but you are in a happy relationship and you aren't Interested?

Disneygeek30 · 14/02/2020 20:23

I would message back and say thank you that’s a lovely gesture but
I have a partner, I hope we can move on from this without too much awkwardness. Then tell your partner, show him the messages be honest with him

Sparkletastic · 14/02/2020 20:25

Reply and say thanks for the flowers but you are in a committed relationship with your DP. How presumptuous of him! He's not that nice if he's done this.

Does he realise you have a partner?

Rationalcat · 14/02/2020 20:30

What a lovely gesture!
How did you know my DP would forget!

quicknamechange80 · 14/02/2020 20:31

Thanks, would something like this work?
Hi. Thank you for the flowers. I appreciate the gesture but as you know I'm in a happy, committed relationship so therefore I'll have to say no to that drink. Nothing needs to be awkward and I hope you had a good day.

I did tell dp who thought it was a sweet thing to do, just misjudged, and that I shouldn't be too cross with the gesture.

Then you can say.....next time....DP didn't forget, afterall. But how lovely of you.

Bluntness100 · 14/02/2020 20:32

Why do awkward?

Just text back and say thank you for the flowers, you really appreciate them, as you're in a relationship you need to decline the drink.

No biggie.

quicknamechange80 · 14/02/2020 20:34

You see Bluntness that's what I would usually do, no issue but I spoke to a friend who said I needed to be careful not to make things awkward or hurt his feelings. (I'm constantly being told I'm too blunt so thought I'd seek more opinions)

Gosh don't write nothing needs to be awkward, why are you making this such a big thing? You'd think you'd never said no to a bloke before.

Hi. Thanks for the flowers. They are gorgeous,,,anyway, sorry, but as I'm seeing someone, I'll have to say no to that drink. Thanks though and hope you had a good day!

Rationalcat · 14/02/2020 20:36

Oops. I missed the drink bit.

Just be gracious, say thank you , but im committed.

Bluntness100 · 14/02/2020 20:36

Cross posted, ignore your weird friend.

quicknamechange80 · 14/02/2020 20:36

He does know I have a partner and I confess I wasn't too amused really, it felt disrespectful but dp (who is far nicer than I am) persuaded me it was just misjudged.

I think you're really over thinking this op.

HalfBiscuit · 14/02/2020 20:38

If he knows you're in a relationship and is still trying it on then he's a cheeky cunt.

"Thanks for the flowers, but as you know I'm in a relationship. Let me know if you'd like me to return the flowers so you can send them on to a single woman"

Thanks all for taking the time to reply.

Just say you liked the flowers
I send flowers to friends just not on valentine's day. Hate the hype.

It doesn't always have to mean romantic love.

Sorry......cancel the cheque!
