Best account for 13 year old?

I think there was a recent thread on this but I can't find it!

DC 13, would be first account, debit card but optional as to whether contactless, definitely no possibility of being allowed to go in debit.

Any recommendations? I think one might auto concert to a student account?

Thanks

I got DD a santander mini 123. You can set up online banking has contactless and can add to apple or Google pay and no overdraft facility. It was good cos you could open it all online and take photos of proof of I'd rather than having to go into branch

My 2 also have Santander mini 123 accounts

I started mine off with a NatWest account and it was a complete pain in the neck. We swapped to Santander and they were much better - app banking etc - which they both love. I'd recommend Santander but avoid NatWest unless you like queueing, banking like it's 1970 and being patronised by the staff.

DD has an account with Nationwide, contactless debit card, no overdraft possibility.

She can also use it to pay by chip/pin abroad and withdraw money abroad.

RoseDog · 13/02/2020 21:05

Both my teens have the Nationwide account the poster above mentioned!

We've used gohenry with younger teens but older ds wants to upgrade to a 'proper' account now. I love gohenry though because you can assign jobs for money on the app, set up savings pots and when I transfer money in I can put a note eg 'birthday money from grandma'. You can also set daily/transaction spend limits and set up whether it can be used online/at cash points etc.

dementedpixie · 13/02/2020 21:26

No way would I pay for something like goHenry when you can get a bank account for nothing

Forgetfebuary · 13/02/2020 21:45

Are all the bank accounts mentioned other than the go Henry free?

dementedpixie · 13/02/2020 21:46

Yes

1busybee · 13/02/2020 21:48

We have nationwide

TriSkiRun99 · 13/02/2020 22:05

My 12yr old has had a HSBC account with the app on her phone and they opened linked savings account with it. Yes the savings rate is minimal but it gets her used to the idea of putting a percentage aside. It’s contactless and been really handy no more finding cash for pocket money she gets it straight into her bank act.

Forgetfebuary · 13/02/2020 22:08

The 123 santander looks v good and pays interest of 3% on balances over 300.

If that's correct that's amazing isn't it?

PeppermintPasty · 13/02/2020 22:11

My 12 yo ds has had a Barclays account for about a year. It’s very straightforward, it’s got a good app to go with it. Contactless but he doesn’t often use that. I imagine most of these accounts are pretty similar. I went with Barclays solely so I could pay stuff in for him at my local branch, it’s the only bank left open in our town!

My kids have Lloyd's accounts. They have a contactless card and banking app.
