Sore throat help!

DH has man flu a virus and has a really sore throat. He’s taken his limit of ibuprofen and paracetamol and nothing has touched it.

Is there anything else you could recommend for him to enable him to sleep?

He’s tried honey so far...

I’ve just had this. Did the same tablets then hot honey and lemon drinks as much as possible. Felt like I was going to die for 2 days but it’s much less sore today.

Sorethroatishoos · 12/02/2020 21:55

Thanks we’ll give that a go.

This is probably the most unwell I’ve seen him. He’s a bit wheezy and feeling sick but it seems to be the sore throat that’s bothering him the most 🤷‍♀️

Gargle with warm salt water - incredibly soothing and clinically proven to make it go away quicker.

My mum always recommends putting a soluble painkiller in water and gargling with that. I favour salt in warm salt water. The best tablets I've found are Boots honey and lemon sore throat tablets. They have worked for me and others who have tried them on my recommendation.

Chew on a marshmallow for a long time. The glucose in it will help sooth a sore throat

Tyrozets - little chalky tablety lozenge things that you suck. They're anaesthetic and have some other magical medicine in them and are great for sore throats. Ask the pharmacist as they're kept behind the counter.

justasking111 · 12/02/2020 22:15

Tyrozets, gargling either with salt water or soluble aspirin.

Whisky + lemon juice + honey + hot water. Quantities to taste.

Gargle lukewarm water with a dissolved Beechams Powder (contains aspirin and caffeine)

My OH was given a whisky mac by a friend recently. He is now taking it for his bad cold. Gawd does it make him snore, but he is sleeping better.

Speaking as someone who suffers with tonsilitis...Strefen (like strepsils but with local anaesthetic in), and/or difflam spray.

frogsbreath · 12/02/2020 23:33

Gargle with salt water

Warm drinks only

Cover mouth and nose with scarf (I know sounds mad but I've got a sore throat now and breathing cold or dry air makes it worse)

Antiseptic and anaesthetic lozenges

Anaesthetic throat spray (I have a benzocaine one I got out co-op but pharmacies might have stronger)

MoltonSilver · 13/02/2020 04:28

With an extreme sore throat, ice cream was the only thing that gave me temporary relief.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 13/02/2020 04:29

Another one for tyrozets and also gargling with diluted TCP. It’s rank but it really works as also numbs the pain a bit which helps with sleep!

MinnieMountain · 13/02/2020 07:11

Anaesthetic spray. It feels weird but does the job.

ShatnersWig · 13/02/2020 08:33

I used to suffer from severe sore throat and my GP said avoid things like Strepsils, they are completely pointless. He said the best things were:
a) soluble aspirin gargled and swallowed
b) salt water gargled not swallowed
c) sleep
d) anaesthetic spray if you need additional relief between a)
e) ice cream

I’m just coming to the end of this after nearly three weeks and nothing really worked, it’s been so painful. Iced water gave slight relief. I eventually turned to Night Nurse which I never usually buy, just to get some sleep. My bedside table looked like a chemist shop
