Transitioning my son to a bed

Hi. Im looking for some advice please. My son turned 2 friday and we want to over the next few months start the transition to a bed. He has a habit of sleeping across the top of the cot and putting his feet up against the wall.
We have now moved his cot away from the wall so he cant do that hoping it will make him think to lay properly. But he still lays across the top and just lets his legs hang out the cot....

Any ideas on ways to help transition him easier. Obv hes only just 2 so know it may take a while.

Thanks in advance

Ds2 slept sideways in his cot. We literally just took the bars off. He fell out twice a night for about a week but has been fine since. He still does sleep kind of sideways though

Don’t overthink it. One of mine still ends up diagonal with his legs hanging over the edge and he’s 11!

Literally get a big boy bed, maybe a guardrail (or just put some pillows on the floor) and leave him to it.

Maybe get a thin blanket over his duvet and tuck it under the mattress, so he doesn't disturb the covers so easily? TBH it isn't a big deal if a child sleeps sideways in a cot or a bed. If he's not putting himself in a dangerous position, and he's not waking up, then I'd say just leave him. I think the modern fashion for leaving children over 1 in a cot is a bit bizarre, and it leads to people overthinking the risks.

Did it used to be normal to transfer toddlers to beds at/before aged one then? When was this? I'm intrigued!

Bluerussian · 13/02/2020 09:04

FriedasCarLoad, I've not heard of that, one and before does seem very young but the op's son is two. Mine was still in a cot in our room at two, I can't for the life of me now remember when he went into a proper bed in his room.

When did he first start to identify as a bed?

:-)

My son was/is the same. We moved him and his brother into bunk beds around his second birthday. We just put up a bed guard and let him get on with it.

I agree with not overthinking it.

Get a bed that's low enough for the toddler to climb back on by themselves.

Then -
Pillows on floor (or the cot mattress!)
Get a bed guard rail if you're really worried.
Done.
