I have the defendants name, which court and the court case reference number - but no details of the actual crime.

What do you want to know? And why? Is the case in the magistrates court or the crown court? You are unlikely to be given any information unless you are the victim.

Local.paper?mine often reports details of local court cases .

Magistrates court is not a court of public record, so no, you are not entitled to information unless you actually go and sit in the court room when the case is dealt with

Local press often reports cases.

Ring the court and ask them. They’ll tell you if they aren’t allowed to share that information.
