Fruit Leather??

Hello everyone,

I need to make some sweet pepperoni to go on top of a pizza cake. I don't want to make all the toppings out of fondant etc. as it will just be insanely sickly.

I've found some online work arounds for the pepperoni which use fruit leather and look really good, but I'm not sure where to get it from and I'd rather not have to make it myself if I can avoid it.

Does anyone know a brand which sells sheets of fruit leather or even winders which are wide enough that I could cut circles out of them to be pepperoni?

Thanks!

If you were to make it yourself, you'd just need to purée up some strawberries and spread on a lined baking sheet and pop in an 80c oven for 5-6 hours. Then you could cut out whatever size you wanted.

soupforbrains · 10/02/2020 16:09

@WilmaJean yeah I know how to make it myself, it's incredibly simple, but I'm rarely able to be at home for a continuous 5-6 hours that is required so I'm hoping to find an alternative.

I know that Bear snacks are made from fruit leather but theirs are all shaped (claws/paws) or the yoyos which are too skinny to be able to cut-out. So I was hoping somebody might be able to suggest another similar brand which either does roll-ups which are an inch or so wide or actually sells it in sheets of some sort?

How about rolling out some 'school bars' or similar?

lettersbyowl · 10/02/2020 17:37

Kellogg's fruit winders?

Minai · 10/02/2020 20:10

There’s a brand of fruit leather called frutina that makes bars of it. I bought some from Holland and Barrett a couple of years ago but can’t see any on their website so not sure if they still sell it

Bezalelle · 10/02/2020 20:53

I have nothing to add, only that the term "fruit leather" brings me over all strange.

soupforbrains · 11/02/2020 10:37

@Icedlatte I have considered that I expect if I warmed them they'd roll out ok, I will also look for Fruitina @Minai thanks.

@lettersbyowl I wish, kelloggs changed their winders recipe years ago, and they're no longer a single 1 inch wide strip but two thinner 1cm wide strips. they're also a bit too sticky and they don't give the same visual effect as the real fruit things.

@Bezalelle I agree, I re-considered uses the phrase several times before posting this thread ha!

Could you maybe cut lengths of some yo-yos, line them up together on some greaseproof paper and heat them very gently in the oven until they’ve melted together?
That way you could make sheets of it to cut out from?

soupforbrains · 11/02/2020 14:14

@SteveHarringtonsHair it's possible, but I think if re-heating will work for reshaping, that it's probably simpler to just warm the bars and roll them out rather than worry about edges sticking/not sticking etc.

I will experiment this week/weekend and report back! Just in case anyone else is mad enough to need to make faux pepperoni cake toppers out of fruit leather! Grin

sometimes i wonder about my sanity

Try rolling out individual strawberry starburst or similar.

soupforbrains · 11/02/2020 15:52

I don't think starburst are at all the right colour or texture, but it's a thought.

Just another idea whilst I'm in my rummaging in the goodies cupboard, how about Haribo giant strawberries, cut the green bit off.

soupforbrains · 13/02/2020 11:56

@HaudMaDug thats a definite back up option as I have some Giant strawbs at home so can definitely flatten and cut them if needed. They won't give the same texture and deep colous as the fruit leather though which is more pepperoni-like I think.

I bought some school bars last night so this evening I am going to see what I can do with warming and rolling them etc.

What about the red (Berry delight) nakd bar? It would be easier to roll out than fruit leather but I think it would give a similar effect.

soupforbrains · 13/02/2020 15:11

@JeezyPeeps ah see, that's the kind of suggestion I was looking for. I'm not familiar with nakd bars, apart from one I had which was oaty and so not the right sort of texture at all so they didn't cross my mind. I will try the school bars tonight, if they don't work then nakd can joing the list of alternatives. thank you

JeezyPeeps · 13/02/2020 15:25

I've not had one in a long time, so I might be wrong about it, but I think it would work.

Alternatively, I came across this

soupforbrains · 13/02/2020 15:51

Thank you but this all started because I don't really want to have to fanny about making and dying (or buying) multiple colours of fondant to make 10 slices of faux pepperoni. plus lots of fondant toppings will make the cake more sweet/sickly.

I have a plan A, B and C now so I should be ok. I'll post back after the experiment tonight and will post pics of finished product once done too. thanks again all.

Yeah, you did say that right at the start of your post! Sorry, mind like a sieve sometimes. Good luck!
