Anyone flown Virgin Atlantic?

Reading through the t&cs on their site and I've come across this...

"If you're travelling with other people, you can't combine your luggage allowance, so you'll need separate cases for each person that fit within the allowance."

There are 4 of us travelling and we were only intending to take one case. Surely they won't force us to bring 4 cases?! Will they? Shock

I don't remember this being an issue, some years ago now.

They were anal in other ways though...

Is it likely that the one case will be over 23kg? If not, you're ok. They mean if you tried to take a 40kg case between four of you. Really heavy cases aren't allowed anyway because of the baggage handlers' backs.

I think as long as your one case is under the weight limit of one person's allowance (eg 23 kg) that should be fine. They usually just don't want super heavy cases.

I think they just mean that if the luggage allowance is (for example) 25kg each, you can't have one case of 30, one of 20 etc.

As some airlines dont care if it's all on the same booking how much each individual bag weighs as long as it comes in under the combined total if you see what I mean.

I used to to work for them and they won't force you to bring 4 cases, promise! What they're saying is that you can't combine your allowances so, for example, if each passenger had a 25 kg allowance, you couldn't check in say a vase that weighed 32 kg and say that you'd just reallocated the allowance. If you don't need 4 cases, don't take 4 but make sure each item you intend to check in is below the max allowance. Some airports are more flexible than others but I've found that the allowance policy is implemented increasingly strictly. I haven't flown with them since they totally reworked the economy product but buying additional allowance may be possible. Hope that helps!

A vase?? Case obviously!

MrsNathanDrake · 09/02/2020 17:45

So if you're planning on only checking in one case, the weight of that case must not exceed the single piece allowance.

whitesoxx · 09/02/2020 17:45

Thanks! I'll keep it below 23 kilo, we're going to be travelling around on a road trip so I don't want a case each! Phew
