Are WW2 sirens going off near anyone?

I thought they would have all been removed! Did you all get warning or did they just start going?

There used to be one on the grounds of my primary school but I think it was removed after the Cold War ended.

Oh aye, but then we have them about four times a year these days!

@redexpat in my city (also northern Europe) they’re tested at 12 noon on the first Monday of every month. Have been in town when this happened and seen some very alarmed tourists!

A chemical plant about 3 or 4 miles away from me tests theirs on the first Wednesday of the month at 10am. Just shows how loud they are that I can hear it from here. As a teenager whenever I heard it I always thought it was my imagination! I still see people post of Facebook asking why it's going off so assume a lot of people don't know about it. It was going off continuously one day a few years back due to a leak.

Newton Aycliffe?

Aldermaston must have had one I expect. Is the site still open, not sure now.

The Newton Aycliffe one is tested once a week. 10.45am on a Thursday. Very loud.

Up until about 10 years ago,sirens would go off round where I lived every Wednesday morning at 11am,for about a minute. Every week,without fail. Someone told me that they were just checking they worked OK,in case they were needed for a flood warning. Suddenly stopped,around 2010. No idea why.

The coastal village I grew up in used an old air raid siren to summon the lifeboat crew.
