Under 20
I say that as someone who had dc 1 at 19, married at 20 and had dc 2 at 21.

Clangus00 · 08/02/2020 19:44

Under 22.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 08/02/2020 19:44

I think officially it is up to 25 years old. I had Dd at 23 I didn't feel particularly young at the time but looking back it is trickier in terms of getting a job, housing etc. I was very fortunate in having a lot of support and childcare so I could get childcare and accommodation sorted but those things are trickier when you are younger.

OwlBasket · 08/02/2020 19:44

A lot of people seem to use ‘young mum’ to mean mother of a young baby, there have been threads on it before.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 08/02/2020 19:45

Should have proofread that, it was a tad repetitive

hopefulhalf · 08/02/2020 19:47

Under 21 (arbitary)

TwitcherOfCurtains · 08/02/2020 19:48

Under 20

maddiemookins16mum · 08/02/2020 19:50

Under 23.

mulkshake · 08/02/2020 19:52

Anything under 25.

NameChange30 · 08/02/2020 19:53

I suppose an arbitrary number would be 21, but given that the average age to have your first child is 28.9, I think that a mother under 25 might seem relatively young.

BackforGood · 08/02/2020 19:56

Under about 25.
Under 20 would be a 'teen Mum' (which, obviously by definition, would be a Young Mum).

AgeLikeWine · 08/02/2020 19:56

I’m old enough to have seen social norms change enormously in developed countries since the era of mass higher education began. When most young women are still in full-time education until they are 21, anything under 22 must count as being a ‘young mum’.

TeachesOfPeaches · 08/02/2020 19:57

Round where I live, anyone under 30.

OhLook · 08/02/2020 19:58

From about 26 or younger.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/02/2020 19:59

23 and under

Growingboys · 08/02/2020 19:59

Under 30 in my part of west London

MyDcAreMarvel · 08/02/2020 20:00

Under 25.

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 08/02/2020 20:01

Under 25
I wouldn’t view it as a pejorative term though

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 08/02/2020 20:02

Actually... under 30 would probably still be called that from time to time round this way too.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 08/02/2020 20:02

I had dc at 16, 19, and 23.. I was definitely a young mum with the first two, borderline with the 3rd. I now volunteer for a group that supports young / teen mums, they define it as 21 and under, but girls can stay on even if they “age out” so to speak.

BigGreenBaskets · 08/02/2020 20:04

26 or under I'd consider young in this case

Helini · 08/02/2020 20:09

Literally never heard of that before in my life! Isn't it obvious that a young mum is a... young....mum...? A mum that is young? How bizarre.

Reminds me of 'What an all day boat party?'...it's a party on a boat...all day Grin

NameChange84 · 08/02/2020 20:16

In my demographic Under 28 is Young, under 24 very young, 28 - 35 average, then 36+ older.

Poetryinaction · 08/02/2020 20:19

Under 25

Istillgetjealous · 08/02/2020 20:19

Under 24 is young imo but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing to have a baby before 24.
