Under 25 as young.
Under 21 as too young.

22/23 and under. From my own experience, being in University until 21, felt like an in between adult and child phase, and it wasn't until after graduation and beginning FT work that I felt properly "grown up". Maybe those who go to work from 18 experience that quicker.

Under 25 I'd class as a young mum

namechangenumber2 · 08/02/2020 20:37

I had my first baby at just turned 23. I was too old to go to the young mum antenatal class, but was by far the youngest in the standard antenatal class.

I didn't feel particularly young, although weirdly I feel a young mum now to my 16 year old son. I'm at least 5-10 years younger than his friends parents.

Under 28 I think.

I suppose I am/was a young mum, I had my first at 21 and my second at 23 (I've just turned 24 last week and now have a 2.8 year old and a 5 week old).

I've never particularly felt like a young mum, but I was definitely the youngest both times on the wards when I gave birth.

What do you think, OP?

Hypergear · 08/02/2020 21:54

Personally the term "young mum" makes me cringe a bit.. Same as "older mum" suppose because they both can be used negatively. I think just mum is fine on its own, lol.
I've known personally mothers at 18/19 to be in secure relationships, have secure jobs and be fantastic mothers despite they're age being below the social norm. I've also known mothers in their late 20s/early 30s who are dreadfully immature and like a child having a child, despite fitting bang into the average age group.
I've also found living in different areas the idea of what is young for a mother varies. I've known some areas where early 20s is the norm to have your first, equally some areas where the norm is mid 30s. Therefore early 20s seems young in comparison.
Made me interested in other people opinions of what is young, as I find it difficult to say myself Smile

It's been used as an insult to DD, who had DGS at 21. She was back at uni 3 weeks later, finished her degree with a decent 2.2, and is now combining a teaching apprenticeship with being the temp head of Drama. We had her when we were 35, and we were a LOT less competent.

I had my first at 26 after two miscarriages at 25. Didn't consider myself to be a young mum at all. Had second son at 29.

Left husband at 33 - one of the best things I ever did as he was genuinely a controlling narcissist of epic proportions.

Now pregnant again with fiancé (his first baby. I'm now 39 so I guess an "older mum" but I feel so much more relaxed about things now that I have support.

Samhradh · 08/02/2020 23:31

Anyone under about 34.

ChelseaGirly · 08/02/2020 23:32

I was 27 when I had my first and was the second youngest mum in the class of 30 kids!

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 08/02/2020 23:35

34! Wow!! My mum had me at 31 in the 80’s and was considered an older mum at that age.

Yika · 08/02/2020 23:36

Under about 27/28 seems young to me.
