So I was on antibiotics (amoxicillin) after being discharged from the hospital with infection a week ago. Finished the amoxicillin on Thursday this week, and my tonsillitis and symptoms went away and I was just left with this awful barking cough. Limited to what I can take due to being 11 weeks pregnant and also have another health condition where the medications can make taking other medications difficult .
Today my tonsils have got big again and white dots on the right hand side, slightly sore to swallow but not major and I still have an awful cough but I don’t feel unwell with it ? Just fed up and depressed with being so sick throughout this pregnancy so far . I can deal with the sore throat but the cough is killing me . Every breath I take it triggers this tickle and I sound like I’m barking . I haven’t slept in days. I really can’t afford more time off work (gone down to half pay) so really want to avoid it turning nasty again but what is it ? Done my temperature it’s 36.5, whereas last week it was 40 and I felt dreadful . So that’s absolutely fine.
Can’t see the dr until Monday, and don’t want to go to the walk in centre as I don’t feel it’s justified really .
Any ideas ? Will gargling salt water help ? I can’t stand honey in water , it makes me gag, I’ve been drinking plenty of normal water and lemon tea. Please help 😩

This is a symptom of bacterial tonsillitis, possible Strep throat. Its likely the Amoxicillin hasn't worked, so you either need another type of antibiotics or more invasive antibiotic therapy (IV).

Are you defo sure you can get an appointment on monday? Id be a bit concerned about waiting it out and it getting worse.

Salt water gargling may help, it may not. Give it a whirl and see what happens!

Your tonsils are septic. I have had it numerous times and it's so painful. Gargling with salt water may help a little but you need more antibiotics to clear it up. Can you get to the walk in centre first thing in the morning?

Your tonsils are septic

You cant diagnose sepsis on just looking at tonsils. They do sound as though they are infected though.

Sepsis is a systemic infection of the entire body, and diagnosis is based on other physiological parameters (Heart rate, blood pressure, temp, O2 saturations etc etc). Equally OP has said her temp is 36.5 now so within a normal range, so its unlikely to be sepsis (although we cant know for sure)

@Letsallscreamatthesistene 100% sure I can get at the drs Monday , they’re very good you can guarantee an appointment with them and I use System Online and can log on at 7am and her an appointment on the day . The thing is I have no other symptoms (thank goodness) of tonsillitis . No fever , no aches , no headaches , nothing whereas last week when I got taken Ill it was so bad they queried meningitis originally! I was vomiting and everything . They gave me IV antibiotics on the ward and then oral antibiotics to take home and they helped everything but then this has happened . I wish I could put a photo but someone might not like it if they come to comment on the thread lol

@snugglysnerd it is painful but the cough is worse than the throat, it is really getting me down . My husband thinks that the cough has triggered the tonsils to get into protective mode to fight off infection rather than tonsillitis but he’s not 100%. I can’t drive and neither does DH so getting to the walk in centre on a Sunday is very hard and I feel like it’s not a justified illness to go with ?

@Letsallscreamatthesistene thank you I was treated for Sepsis in the hospital and they’re most certainly not septic now . I was so poorly , had seizures etc and was unresponsive , BP was dangerously low , heart rate was sky high, definitely never went to experience that again !!

Sepsis is so dangerous so im glad you caught it!

Considering your recent past medical history though, id go to a walk in centre. I dont think you'd be unjustified in doing that. I see patients for less! One came in for a grazed knee the other day.

@Letsallscreamatthesistene yes I’m so glad too. My husband is a nurse and when he saw me in the middle of the night (I got up quietly to go to the bathroom as I knew I felt funny) he woke up and rang 111 for advise as at first it wasn’t as serious but then it got worse and worse and I was blue lighted to the hospital , can’t fault our NHS can you, it’s fantastic ! I wish you were my Dr , you sound really good ! If I’m worse tomorrow or any changing symptoms I’ll go to the walk in , it’s just so hard to get to whereas the drs is an easy bus ride but I suppose when it comes to health you can’t cut corners ! MN is so good for advise when drs are closed ! My husband wants me to talk to my consultant next week when I see her after my 12 week scan as he thinks I have prenatal depression 😩 I’ve just had such an awful time I’m so miserable !
