My wedding set was that sort of flaky stoneware which was absolutely rubbish - flung it all out 9 years ago. Current set is lasting well (John Lewis) but have to admit breakages got more common when I replaced our worktops with granite. I drop mugs more often than plates though, luckily!

justasking111 · 07/02/2020 13:50

I have my grannies tea service that my father bought her. That comes out rarely.

fairislecable · 07/02/2020 13:58

I have Denby Metz and Imperial Blue and used everyday for about 30 years.

I managed to replenish my stock by buying some plates on eBay last year.

I too was going to change but couldn’t see anything I liked better or as robust as the Denby.

MoaningMinniee · 07/02/2020 14:08

Spode Blue Italian, the stuff in daily use is fairly modern, but I have some special pieces that only come out a couple of times a year (sauce boats, serving bowls, coffee and tea stuff etc) that date back to the early nineteenth century. It has been in production since 1816 and has been passed to eldest daughters for at least six generations, probably longer.

Today ,funnily enough after I had written upthread about still having and using my 30 year old Denby, I was clearing out my dishwasher and noticed that one of the new Denby bowls I bought is already chipped. So it looks like maybe the quality isn't as good as it once was.Such a pity!

zasknbg · 07/02/2020 14:38

30 years
Dishwashed daily!
Think as it’s that old, it’s higher quality than new stuff. Like everything really.

Natsku · 07/02/2020 14:40

Was wondering what dinger plates were!

I have no idea how old mine are, I bought them from a charity shop 4 or 5 years ago. I just buy more from charity shops when some break so don't have a full set of anything but I have an eclectic mixture.

ShinyGiratina · 07/02/2020 14:56

Denby Azure going strong after 10 years including years of use by the DCs. We went for it as we didn't see the point in "best" and "every day" china, and we wanted it to be smart and durable. Bonus, there's a factory shop nearby so we bought seconds in a January sale (one of the big reasons for asking for money for the home as a wedding gift, as it would have cost at least 50% more to have bought it through something like a Debenhams gift list)

A vinyl kitchen floor helps it bounce too!

Elbeagle · 07/02/2020 15:09

Surprised how many people have expensive dinner sets, it’s not really something I’ve considered spending a lot of money on!
Ours are Sainsbury’s, I think cost £18 a set and we bought 2 sets so that we had 8 of everything. That was about 10 years ago.

Elbeagle · 07/02/2020 15:10

That’s daily use and with 3 DC’s so not bad value for money.

weegiemum · 07/02/2020 15:24

We have a plentiful number of plain white (mainly ikea) plates, bowls and side plates. They don't all match but are great everyday and easily replaced. We bought the first lot when we moved house in 2006.

Our "Sunday" set is Denby Marrakesh and was a wedding present so 25 years old. Gets used most weeks. Still have all the plates, bowls and side plates but the serving dishes have depleted over the years and the mugs (which I loved) are long gone.

We have a fairly eclectic mug selection. I have at least 4 favourite mugs!!

CorianderLord · 07/02/2020 15:57

3 years old. Bought when we got our first house. I have smashed a good 5

Sockwomble · 07/02/2020 15:59

Wedding gift 21 years ago from BHS.

dayowl · 07/02/2020 15:59

1 years old. I’m hoping they’ll last

safariboot · 07/02/2020 16:02

We've got a few that are about 15 years old. Our previous set was bought only a few years ago but chipped very easily. Then we bought a set last autumn. There's also the fancy plates in storage, they go back maybe 10 years but are hardly ever used.

safariboot · 07/02/2020 16:04

PS: Also, in our previous upstairs flat, dropped dishes would usually stay intact. Now we have a house with a kitchen floor that's vinyl over concrete, dropped stuff smashes. Maybe I'm stating the obvious but it makes a difference.

ClinkyMonkey · 07/02/2020 16:10

I have a 25 year old Habitat set. There have been a few breakages, but I have all the dinner plates and side plates and most of the bowls. It's plain white with a blue stripe around the edge and never looks dated. When I'm buying a few more bits and pieces, I choose something white, blue or both and it fits in nicely.

namechangenumber2 · 07/02/2020 16:11

We've got a couple of sets - the oldest were bought for my "bottom drawer" ( do people still do this?!) when I was about 18 - so about 20 years, and the newer set was a wedding gift so nearly 12 years old

ThePolishWombat · 07/02/2020 16:16

@weegiemum I’ve got a bit of a mug obsession too Blush
I love weird and wonderful ones - the stranger the shape, the better!! I’ve got a brilliant one shaped like Snow White’s cottage with little dwarves hanging off it

PickAChew · 07/02/2020 16:16

Denby juice that I started collecting in the late 90s. Beginning to get a few dings, in places!

theoriginalmadambee · 07/02/2020 16:17

Actually I only came on the thread for the 'dinger'. English is not my first language, so I was intrigued 🤣.

wonkylegs · 07/02/2020 16:17

Our white ones are 15 yrs old, our beige rimmed ones are 7yrs old but replaced a set that were my mums from 1980 and came to uni and then married life - last time we moved I decided the dates flowers had had their day and got something simpler.

JellyfishandShells · 07/02/2020 16:21

About 20 years old, large white ones from a long defunct branch of Allders. Am amazed that daily use has resulted in not a single chip or break, though a bit scratched in the centre.

Babdoc · 07/02/2020 16:23

Well, the ornate tea set I inherited a while ago from a 91 year old aunt was passed down to her by her equally ancient great aunt, who got it from an old aunt - so probably it dates from about 1860!
My everyday dishes go back merely to 1983. We bought 12 of everything, so there’s still plenty left, despite occasional breakages.

QuixoticQuokka · 07/02/2020 16:24

I'm not sure as they are hand me downs, but I think the original ones are about 10 years old. They are IKEA 365 so it's easy to replace them if I break them.
