How do you feel about dressing up for World Book Day?

Do you enjoy dressing your child up as a book character? Or would you rather their school didn’t do it?

I don't mind it. But my children's school is quite open about interpretation so a choice of book, character or even author. (My son went as Terry Pratchett one year)
I would hate to do it like my friend' children's school does it where they get allocated one obscure book that none of the parents have heard of. I've even heard of children being told what character to go as which is even worse.

I know adverts are not allowed on here, so this is not an advert.

But, if in a couple of days you were to peruse the Kindle store there might be a book about a little girl called Poppy.

Hate it. Doesn't help that DDs school does their own 'book day' at a completely different day to the rest of the country so you can't get any costumes in Sainsbury's for the random day they choose.

They also have a dress up day for other random reasons at least once every half term.

I'm completely sick of it. As is DD.

I like it but realise it is absolute nonsense. At least it's not pretending to be for charity. I still remember the children in need day where I realised I had donated 10 pounds to Tesco for the requested outfit and £1 (requested donation) to children in need.

It seems a lot of the problem is people worry too much about making or spending.
I tend to just look around, see what we have available and then try and work out who they can go as using it. I've never bought a costume and we've only ever made card accessories (mask for Mr Fox, hat for... actually that hat got used for 4 different costumes over the years... etc).
Only thing I did buy that was useful was a basic set of face paints years ago that has covered different events (Halloween etc) for four children for years.
