How old were your kids when you could stay in your own bed undisturbed all night?

I'm not asking when your DC slept through as I know children aged five who still don't and it's just depressing. However- I try to console myself with the thought that if a five year old wakes they are self sufficient enough not to scream for their parents in the night? (Maybe.)

How old were your kids when you could go to bed, stay in your own bed and not need to get out until the morning?

It depends what you mean by undisturbed?
I mean, my youngest is 24 and he can go crashing up the stairs at 2am some Friday nights 🤷🏼

looselegs · 05/02/2020 21:52

Never.....
My kids are 16 and 21 now and they only ever came into our bed when they'd had a bad dream or if they were Ill.

MyCatScaresDogs · 05/02/2020 21:53

Aged 3 here - he was an awful sleeper and there was much co-sleeping before he hit 2.5 but he then started sleeping through and since age 3, unless he’s ill or has a nightmare, we generally are undisturbed from 1900 to 0630. And by God, do I know how lucky we are.

So we had a second a few weeks ago.Grin

Mine are 8, 5 and 3. The 5 year old is in his own bed and doesn’t appear until morning. The 8 and 3 year old is anyone’s guess...

TheChosenTwo · 05/02/2020 21:56

They were all about 1 when they would reliably be put down to bed, left to go to sleep on their own and then would wake in the morning.
They’ve only ever come into our bed in the night if they’ve been poorly (very rare) and I hate sharing my bed so I usually got out and left dh (very cuddly) to it.

superram · 05/02/2020 22:00

Mine stopped coming into our bed at 5 and 9. We bought a big bed

definitelyshouldknowbetter · 05/02/2020 22:01

I thought I was an amazing parent to DC1 who slept through at approx 6weeks from 10pm to 630amWink
Turns out I’m not and DC2 did not sleep a single night undisturbed till he was twoAngry

Schmeller · 05/02/2020 22:02

About 2 months for a full 6 hours. Maybe 6 months for 8-10 hours. Loves her sleep. Still does!

RedLemon · 05/02/2020 22:03

This is pleasingly reassuring.

My 5 year old comes in most nights but just lets us know and climbs aboard the (very deliberately) giant bed. 3 year old comes in several times a week and flails around RIDICULOUSLY for 30 minutes or so and then we’re good till somewhere around 6am when the dawn flailing chorus begins for another 30-40 mins before rising.

It still light years better than it was in the trenches of babyhood (which lasted till aged 2 or so for both).

I can’t ever really foresee an undisturbed night’s sleep again which I’m oddly fine about in a numb sort of way (spirit crushed by child overlords).

Anniecott · 05/02/2020 22:06

My son is 17 and still sleeps in with us sometimes and regularly needs me during the night but he is ASC with additional medical needs, so this is why. X

Bitofnamechanging · 05/02/2020 22:07

Mine are 2 and 3 now. They've slept through about 3/4 of the time since we put them in a room together at 1y9m and 2y9m.

Muddlingalongalone · 05/02/2020 22:07

Dd1 felt like a nightmare living through it but was in hindsight wonderful. She was 3.
Dd2 is 5.5 and still comes into my bed every night without fail. It's fine when I'm there first but when she's in before 11:30. Grrrr

AudacityOfHope · 05/02/2020 22:08

My kids were 7 and 5 when I realised I had started sleeping like a normal person again, rather than that light sleep you do when you're half listening out for something.

Saying that though the 9 year old has been up the last two nights at 3am because her clock ticking now scares her. But that's not the norm any more.

8MinutesToSunrise · 05/02/2020 22:09

Since he was 2.5, he mostly just sneaks into my bed at some point in the night with very little noise. The other night he didn't come in until 4am, I woke up and got out of bed to check he was ok!

Antihop · 05/02/2020 22:10

My 5 year old still climbs into bed with me most nights. But I don't mind.

I think you are getting a skewed view here with everyone keen to tell you their horror stories. Don't think these are 'typical' or perhaps that common.
Lots of children sleep through after the first few months - except on the odd occasion they aren't well and wet the bed or are sick or just wake up, upset.
Mine are grown up now so I can't remember when, exactly in months, but it wasn't years like most of these unlucky posters have had to cope with.

Peacenquiet2 · 05/02/2020 22:14

In short, there is no magical age. I've never heard of any teens still sleeping with parents though, so there's a light at the end of the tunnel

Poetryinaction · 05/02/2020 22:16

Dc1 was nearly 1.
Dc2 was 3.
Dc3 was just over 1.
But between the 3 of them, with wet beds, nightmares, coughs... we still get woken a lot of nights! (They are now 6, 4 and 2).

SallyWD · 05/02/2020 22:17

Both of them around 12 months

oohnicevase · 05/02/2020 22:21
