Discussing pay at appraisal

I have my appraisal soon. I am doing well in my job but am at the top of the pay grade, although the job I am now doing is a new job for this sector and there isn't really a comparable role. I would like to ensure that I don't miss out on increments going forward and also feel it would be appropriate to have a modest increase in my pay.

The trouble is I think I have "imposter syndrome" and having negotiated a huge pay rise since starting in my original role and moving to this one two years ago, I now feel almost bad asking for more money! My boss is fair and easy to talk to but I want a way of bringing up the subject without seeming grabby or greedy. Can anyone advise please?

If you are at the top of your pay grade, is there scope to move up a band? If you are over-performing in some areas could you use that as a means to investigate possibility of promotion to a more senior role?
