What was your favourite school dinner?

Mine was sausage meat pie in grey pastry.
Always served with lb carrots mash and gravy.

I was at school when they invented blackboards though, doubt it would pass nutritional needs now.

What was your favourite and what decade was it?

@marinetta I loved that cornflake tart too! Found a recipe online and often make it as a treat for the kids with lovely non school dinner custard www.bakingmad.com/recipe/cornflake-tart

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/02/2020 18:01

@DeathMetalMum you can get cheese and hamwich from Iceland

Herocomplex · 04/02/2020 18:03

I ate fishcake and chips every day for three years. My best friend had pasty, chips and beans. Delicious but dear god how terrible.

Sausage Plait. I make it for supper sometimes now.

AutumnCrow · 04/02/2020 18:05

I have tried in vain to recreate school dinner rissoles. My ingredients are clearly not cheap enough.

ScissorsPalace · 04/02/2020 18:09

80s kid.

The pork pie/tart thing was OK, but the lumpy Smash and tinned veg it came with weren't 🤢

Fishfingers & chips on a Friday was the only meal I really looked forward to.

And most of the puddings! Chocolate cake and chocolate custard, strawberry yoghurt & shortcake biscuits, caramel tart, sponge topped with jam and desiccated coconut. Yum!

Second time I've said this in a reply tonight;

Turkey Twizzlers!

Hated school dinners - packed lunch all the way!

My dc always have packed lunch & love them so much they request them on days out instead of buying food out.

Saying that when I was at college they served these amazing veggie burgers that I happily lived on for most of the year!

AnnaMariaDreams · 04/02/2020 18:15

Spam fritters!

ElloBrian · 04/02/2020 18:21

Anything with chips Blush

Anyone remember sponge with “Fairy Liquid sauce” ? (That’s what we called it anyway ... It looked exactly like warm washing up liquid ... not sure even now what the flavour was meant to be. Maybe lime?!)

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 04/02/2020 18:22

Sausage meat plait! Best thing ever.
Also the triangle chocolate biscuit things and pink custard with a skin!

Lifeoverhaul · 04/02/2020 18:23

Sausage rolls and chips.
Cornflake cake blancmange.

AnnieOH1 · 04/02/2020 18:24

Proper old school cheese flan - that really sloppy quiche type thing. I'm actually making it tomorrow as it's become a delicious though unhealthy favourite since finding the right recipe a few years ago!

FREEM · 04/02/2020 18:27

fish fingers chips and beetroot
oh an scorned beef chips and A weird tomato and cucumber salad thing
oh and caramel tart

Waffle12 · 04/02/2020 18:29

@Fivetillmidnight

Do you have an Asda or Morrisons near u? Some near us actually sell gypsy tart (surrey/kent)

Bit too much pastry but the filling tastes exactly how I remember!! I stock up each time I go to one that sells them!

ComtesseDeSpair · 04/02/2020 18:31

I remember the combinations always being rather odd: cheese and onion quiche with rice and spaghetti hoops; roast chicken and gravy served with potato waffles, sweetcorn and peas; a weird cheese and potato pie thing with chips and baked beans. Even curry would invariably have weird ingredients like sweetcorn and apple in it. Early ‘90s.

I never got to experience the delight of sponge pudding with green custard because whenever I had school dinner my mum drummed into me that I had to pick the healthy dessert option of fruit or yoghurt and I was convinced she’d find out if I didn’t.

lottie360 · 04/02/2020 18:32

Turkey twizzlers!.
Also liked the syrup sponge.

Waffle12 · 04/02/2020 18:34

Did anyone used to have the flat round 'chips'?

They were perfectly smooth and sort of slightly oval shape. Definately processed. Tried to look everywhere over the years for something similar but no luck. Always used to be served with a funny version of tomato ketchup aswell!

EngagedAgain · 04/02/2020 18:36

Chocolate sponge and custard 😋

TheQueef · 04/02/2020 18:36

I'd forgot the yoghurt and biscuits.
Hardly any one liked it I ate my body weight, never had yoghurt at home to me it was exotic Grin

Soup and a sandwich. The soup was in a glass but you didn't get another 'drink'. The sandwiches were cut into triangles and you could mix and match fillings. We used to dunk the sandwiches in the soup. Can't remember what the matching pudding was. I always liked the cornflake tart with custard. Yum yum, in my tum!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/02/2020 18:37

@Waffle12 I think they are called potato slices can get from most big supermarkets in frozen section

EmmiJay · 04/02/2020 18:38

I had several 🤣 I loved the pizza and chips in secondary school (the pizza sauce was so zingy and I've never tasted anything like it since.) In primary school we had lamb, roasties, cabbage and the best gravy in the world. Then the desserts🤤 chocolate custard with ice cream or school cake with custard. Omg take me back!

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/02/2020 18:39

Sausage roll, beans and chips.
Iced sponge cake for afters.

Waffle12 · 04/02/2020 18:39

Ooooo @PrincessHoneysuckle

I have never seen anything like it. I'll be having a look tomorrow!!!
