Shocked at wraparound care price

Have been helping a crowd with some issues and we’ve been looking at various things - one thing that came up was the cost of wraparound care ! £80 per week per child !
Is that average?
Are childminders generally cheaper ?

Our breakfast and after school club is £55 a week. That's from 7.30 in the mornings until 5.45 in the evenings.

That’s all very well @Onemamma but if you can’t afford that much what are you meant to do ! £80 p w per child is a lot and the family in question have 2 needing this care

JassyRadlett · 03/02/2020 13:28

Ours is £24.75 a day, in outer London. £80 sounds idyllic to me!

Crabonastick · 03/02/2020 13:30

£82.50 per child here for wrap around care- if you are lucky enough to get a space. It’s £187.50 per week at the nearest Childminder’s due to the costing structure

edwinbear · 03/02/2020 13:30

I pay £100 pw per child (have 2 DC) in London, that's unfortunately the going rate.

Orchidflower1 · 03/02/2020 13:31

Ours is £11.35 for after school and £8.60 for before school so basically £20 a day or £100 per week. So £80 is fairly cheap I’d say. Is that everyday though?
CM will charge you all year round though. I only pay this in term time but top up with holiday club/ holiday etc

BlueChampagne · 03/02/2020 13:34

That does seem quite pricey unless school holidays are somehow factored in. Our after school club (runs till 6) is about £8.50 a session, and we don't use the breakfast club. This price includes a snack; do they offer a full meal, or special classes/entertainment? I do pay for the after school clubs DS2 wants to do on top of that.

I found that after school club was less expensive than a child minder.

moneyQuerying · 03/02/2020 13:34

Wow it just seems so much ! I thought cm may work out better but didn’t realise they’d charge all year

Just seen the replies that came in while I was writing. I'll count my lucky stars then!

BlueChampagne · 03/02/2020 13:35

Some CMs may do term-time only - no harm in asking.

KitKat1985 · 03/02/2020 13:36

That sounds pretty average to me.

DimplesMcGee · 03/02/2020 13:39

We pay £50 per week for 4 sessions of breakfast club and 2 of afterschool club. So I'd say £80 sounds about right.

Beautiful3 · 03/02/2020 13:42

Yes it is the norm here in the Midlands too. Wrap around and holiday care is so expensive. That's why I've given up my job to be a sahm until they leave primary school.

99problemsandthecatis1 · 03/02/2020 13:44

Yep. We've worked out that due to a few factors (including sibling discount) it's more cost effective for DS to go to the private school attached to his current nursery, DC2 also attends the nursery.

DesLynamsMoustache · 03/02/2020 13:44

@OneMamma Really? You're confused? Hmm Dear me.

DimplesMcGee · 03/02/2020 13:46

I’m always confused when people complain about childcare costs. Our children’s welfare is the most important thing so I am happy to pay for good quality childcare rather just finding the cheapest option.

Says someone who has never been poor, I'm assuming. You could easily re-write that sentence:

I’m always confused when people complain about food costs. Healthy wholesome food is the most important thing so I am happy to pay for good quality organic food rather just finding the cheapest option.

or

I’m always confused when people complain about housing costs. A snug comfortable home is the most important thing so I am happy to pay for a lovely big house rather just finding the cheapest option.

Are you really confused or are you just trying to shame the OP? Check your middle-class privilege. Obviously everyone wants the best quality childcare for their children, but you can't get blood out of a stone.

Lipperfromchipper · 03/02/2020 13:48

I pay €7 per hour for 2 children at Afterschool. No such thing as breakfast club.

PineappleDanish · 03/02/2020 13:50

So 21 hours of childcare a week for £80? Doesn't sound expensive to me.

Knowivedonewrong · 03/02/2020 13:50

As someone who helps manage an after school club, you should have highly qualified staff to look after the children, which we are.
We offer sports as well so the children have good variety.

Serendipity79 · 03/02/2020 14:01

I pay £2.50 for breakfast club from 7.30 and then £2 per hour for afterschool club which runs until 5.15 so £13 a day for both of my little ones. I think its cheap as anything!

moneyQuerying · 03/02/2020 14:02

Seems about average then ! I had no idea tbh what the normal rates were I just thought it sounded high but I’ve never looked into it before

Same here. When people screech "£50 a day!!" - well how much should it cost Hmm that's not even minimum wage and they're looking after your child FFS
