Shocked at wraparound care price

Have been helping a crowd with some issues and we’ve been looking at various things - one thing that came up was the cost of wraparound care ! £80 per week per child !
Is that average?
Are childminders generally cheaper ?

It's £5 for our local breakfast club - they walk the child across to school. And the after school club is £11 I believe. so £80 a week per child if in both sessions 5 days a week. We're in West Yorkshire.

We changed our hours to suit school He does 8-3 and I do 9-5 to facilitate drop off and pick up. Seemed better for us as a family to do that.

Those who don’t have to pay for childcare, especially those who never have had to live on a very different planet to those who have no other option. And there perceptions of cost will be different based on this.

Their not there!

With regards to the cost, many countries have heavily subsidised childcare but really good quality.

For many, the cost is prohibitive to returning to work, which is hardly fair.

Cyberlibre · 03/02/2020 14:25

That is under £4 an hour, I'd say that is really cheap, a childminder would likely cost more!

icelollycraving · 03/02/2020 16:13

Cheaper than mine!

NothingIsWrong · 03/02/2020 16:16

I pay £5/hour - 1 hour before school and 3 hours after comes to £100/week per child, so that sounds reasonable. They get fed two meals a day for that. I don't actually work full time, but that is what full time wraparound would costs.

haveuheard · 03/02/2020 17:20

£82.50 here.

But most people don't pay the full cost anyway as they qualify for tax free childcare, childcare vouchers, UC or WTC. So for us the £82.50 would actually cost £66.

URPS · 03/02/2020 17:29

My child care was a while ago but our school did free care from 7.30am and the outsourced after school care - was only £4 a day ! (London).

Some of these prices are shocking.

peanutbuttermarmite · 03/02/2020 17:34

Yes about £80ish a week here too (Scotland), and the fact they’re being cared for in a large-ish group too doesn’t suit all kids.

BlueThursday · 03/02/2020 18:27

About that for us here

Childcare costs have been a massive factor in us having only one child

Sewrainbow · 03/02/2020 18:27

£182 a week here for 2 children.

ReginaGeorgeous · 03/02/2020 18:29

£70 a week here for 7:30 til 6pm. Includes food, I actually think it's pretty reasonable.

Muddlingalongalone · 03/02/2020 18:31

£13.50 per child per day here - cheaper than full time nursery was!
I always think holiday club seems like a comparative bargain at £120 per week.

HelenaJustina · 03/02/2020 18:31

£4.50 for breakfast club
£10 for after school club

£72.50 a week per child. It’s not cheap but the provision at our school is very good.

CecilyBlue · 03/02/2020 18:32

I pay £1.50 for breakfast club from 8am and £5 for after school club until 5.30pm so £32.50 per week. Although ours is run by the TAs and dinner ladies.

cobwebsoncornices · 03/02/2020 18:37

I think part of the problem stems from the myth that childcare is so much cheaper once children start school.
My DC need an hour's childcare before school and 3 hours after school. It would be £7 for school breakfast club and & £18 for afterschool club which includes breakfast/a snack. Childminders here are £7 per hour per child. If your child does an after school activity, there is that cost on top.
My job pays well but I still try not to do the maths of what childcare plus commute is costing me as I think it would horrify me. It did make me realise why, despite the difference in our gross salary, I don't have any more money than a friend who earns only a little above NMW but walks to work and relies on grandparents for childcare. I keep reminding myself I am in it for the long term and the pension will be worth it ... but I'm not so sure!

BackforGood · 03/02/2020 18:39

Well surely that's only £4 an hour ? (£80 / 5 days = £16 per day. 7.45 - 8.45 is 1 hour before school then 3 hours after school, so 4 hours = £4 per hour), without taking any money out of the equation to pay for food.
My dc are grown up now, so - considering it is 10 years since I needed wrap around care, I'm surprised it isn't more.

GreyishDays · 03/02/2020 18:39

It shouldn’t be minimum wage, it’s not as though it’s a 1:1 ratio!

Ours is £15 for an after school session which I was really surprised at. I thought it would be about £3 an hour. We have two children so it means it’s not worth me working the extra time. And that’s why it seems a lot @OneMamma
It’s not that my children aren’t worth it, it’s that having taken ten years out of work to look after them, I now am not earning very much.

formerbabe · 03/02/2020 18:43

It's about £100 a week here...£5 for breakfast club and £15 for tea club... I don't think it's expensive for what it is...I think wages are too low which makes it feel like a big chunk of your earnings for many people.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 03/02/2020 18:44

The childminder I've just signed up for is £360 a month for before and after school - I was a bit naive thinking it would be cheaper than that but she does provide breakfast and evening meals

MummytoCSJH · 03/02/2020 18:45

£68.50 per week for me, 7:45-8:50am and then 3:15-6pm. It seems like a lot when you see it but a childminder here would be a lot more.

RabbitBeaver · 03/02/2020 18:47

I pay £44 a week and that's for 5x breakfast from 7.30-8.35 and 4x after school from 3.25-5.30

Invisimamma · 03/02/2020 18:47

We're £5 for breakfast club and £15 for after school. So £100 pw if attending every day.

I think this is about average.

HariboBrenshnio · 03/02/2020 18:48

Ours is £100 per week per child in Yorkshire - £6 for breakfast club and £12 for after school. They get breakfast and a hot meal for that and it's term time only. Free's up some money for sports club in the holidays!
