DS just signed “more”!

I have twins who are nearly 3.5 - both are autistic, non verbal, don’t understand words. DT2 has other disabilities as well. He is severely delayed across the board, doesn’t play with toys, constantly sensory seeking. He’s barely made any progress since he had a big skills regression nearly two years ago.

This weekend he’s been able to focus on play for a bit longer than usual. I was trying to get him to sign “more” yesterday while playing but he wasn’t really having it (DT1 has been signing more for about 8 months now, it’s the only sign he knows and uses it for everything).

He’s just finished his breadstick and run up to me with a big grin and signed more, clear as day! I can’t believe it. Now sobbing to myself and feeling hopeful about things.

Sorry - had to get that off my chest!

Oh wow! How absolutely fantastic! I used to work with adults with learning and physical disabilities, and I was trying for 6 months to teach the man I key worked to ask for a cup of tea, by collecting his cup from the work top and taking it to a member of staff. I had the staff primed to drop whatever they were doing and to give him a cup of tea and a lot of praise straight away. The day I came on shift and a staff member told me M had asked for a cup of tea, I cried. I understand totally how you feel. Amazing achievement.

That’s wonderful news! I remember when my autistic son signed again...it’s just the most fulfilling feeling! It gets better as well Wink

That’s fantastic, the first time is always amazing. Wait until they learn the signs for the things they really want!! My son will sign I want more biscuit, biscuit, biscuit please, thank you and thinks he’ll get an unlimited supply of them 😂. He’ll use PECs too, but is really finding his expression with makaton.

That’s beautiful Byerley!

He’s just brought me his cup and said “mermermer” and then signed it just in case I didn’t know what he meant!

I have no idea what’s happened this weekend - something’s happened because he’s just so much more aware. It’s tough with him as he will do something for a few weeks and then it will just disappear and he’ll never do it again. Hopefully this is different and we are moving forwards :)
