Tell me about car leasing please!

We've always bought second hand cars and kept them until they are on their last legs. We're now in a situation where we need a bigger family car, and for a decent second hand one (also needs to be ULEZ compliant) will be about £20kShock.
DH has suggested we lease instead. We do just under 10k miles a year.

But I'm worried about having to keep the car in perfect condition. I will without doubt hit bollards (gently!) when parking or something similar, I know I will. Plus we have kids who play football in muddy fields most weeks so the inside of our car is pretty impossible to keep clean. Because of this I just don't think leasing is for us.
Can people tell me more?

I’m was in a similar quandary at the end of last year when I changed my car. I have a dog (muddy, hairy, smelly type) and I wasn’t convinced that leasing/PCP similar schemes were right for me, having always bought cars and p/ex for the next one. I looked at the figures for the upfronts, the monthly costs and the added extras like maintenance packages and decided just to buy outright. It worked out better for us.

We bought a 2015 kia sorento for £17.5k
We splashed out a little on a higher spec because we thought if we were gonig to spend that much we may as well love driving it.

We had a payout from insurance company for 6k, savings of 5k and borrowed the rest from the in laws...
