Talk to me about the Amazon Firestick

15 year old ds is getting a new smart tv in his bedroom for his birthday. At the moment we have Sky but only in the living room and also Netflix. He is bored of watching just " normal" tv.

I am not willing to pay even more to Sky than I already do so do not intend to have Sky in his room. I assume he can watch Netflix if we are not already watching it downstairs at the same time?

So what does the Amazon Fire Stick do? Once I have bought it are there any more charges and what can he watch? I do have an Amazon account ( although not Prime) but don't want to be paying out any extra as
the yearly bill for our Sky package and broadband is already astronomical.

It depends on what Netflix subscription you have. We have the one where 4 devices can watch at the same time. He will be able to get catch up services on his smart TV or the firestick. If you aren't willing to pay for Sky or Amazon prime then that's all he will be able to watch.

I upgraded my netflix (cost an extra 3quid) and it can now be watched on up to 4 devices...firestick has all the catch up channels and you tube..my dd 15 has one and netflix and youtube are the ones she uses most..

Fire stick is ok but I think you need prime. I found my stick remote broke really quickly and Amazon were useless and looking in forums it's a common issue. I have prime through my playstation and I love it. Watch most of my stuff through that

You can use the fire stick just for netflix. I've had mine for over 5 years and no problems with it so far. I do have prime, which has better films (imo) than Netflix, but I prefer the tv series on Netflix. If you are definitely not getting prime then it might be better to get a tv that allows direct access to Netflix without the additional stick.

Also, sky are pretty good at reducing your bill if you threaten to cancel (on the phone - their web chat is crap). To get the very best discounts you have to be prepared to actually cancel the contract and they often call you back within a couple of weeks. You can also get Netflix through sky which might be cheaper than having both separately. Also, if you have sky you should have SkyGo, which would allow DS to watch live sky tv on a laptop / tablet for no extra cost - but you can't record on that.

We have Netflix for up to 4 devices and you can download on 2. You could get prime membership for a free month trial. Or just buy a month of something else - Disney plus if he likes Star Wars for example

Have you thought about getting a Roku stick? They seem to be better than a fire stick.

If you're getting him a smart tv you may not need one. Our smart tv, which is a couple of years old at this point, allows you to watch Netflix, amazon, YouTube etc from the tv menu.

A firestick really just adds that functionality to older TVs.
