I've just been made redundant. I've no idea how I'm going to cope. What the hell do I do now?!

I don't know what I want from this post. I just feel so lost.

Go to entiltled to website. In the short term you may be eligible for financial help. Then plan, update CV

travailtotravel · 28/01/2020 20:11

One step at a time.

travailtotravel · 28/01/2020 20:12

Start with looking at local job sites.

SuperMeerkat · 28/01/2020 20:13

So sorry to hear that @SidneyPrescott When does your job end? Definitely get going with the job applications and onto the temp agencies Flowers

3luckystars · 28/01/2020 20:18

Will you get redundancy money?

Sorry this happened, you must be so shocked.

SidneyPrescott · 28/01/2020 20:23

28th of Feb is my last day. I'll get my bonus but no pay as I've not even been there a year. I'm absolutely floored. I'm the main breadwinner, so I feel like I'm shouldering all the pressure.

FAQs · 28/01/2020 20:36

You’ll be paid until the end of Feb and I could be wrong but I’m sure they have to allow you reasonable time off for interviews in your notice period. No insurance?

3luckystars · 28/01/2020 20:54

What did you do before this job? Can you go back to something similar?
Was it a total bolt from the blue you seem really shocked.
Are they closing down and are many of your colleagues in the same boat. If they are then take tonight to be upset and get out straight away tomorrow on the job hunt. Hopefully you will find something even better. Good luck.

SidneyPrescott · 28/01/2020 20:55

I didn't know you could get insurance for redundancy!

I'm not sure I'll be entitled to much. We own our house, which am I right in thinking, makes a difference? I'll definitely have a look though!

OP posts:
3luckystars · 28/01/2020 20:57

You own your house outright, no mortgage?

SidneyPrescott · 28/01/2020 20:59

No. It's mortgaged.

I lost my job very suddenly. I took two days to be upset, and then did my CV, messaged a few friends and started browsing the job sites
Short term I took a job as a carer because I needed the money and it gave me breathing space. Applied for a job which I got which was 32hrs and kept working as a carer. The 32hr job then offered me a FT contract which I took
That was two years ago, and I'm actually glad. It was a horrific time but I love my job now and am much less stressed Thanks

FAQs · 28/01/2020 23:25

You can get redundancy, sickness and critical illness cover. Most policies have a 3 month clause, whereby you can’t claim in the first quarter of the policy.

You might be able to claim help with the mortgage, although I think it’s similar to a loan you need to pay back. Also does your mortgage company allow a payment holiday? Most do depending on how long you’ve had the mortgage. It’s council tax free months Feb/March if you pay over 10 months.

SidneyPrescott · 29/01/2020 10:52

Thank you all.

One more thing, my company has stated we need to provide proof of interviews in order to get time off for them. Is this normal?

OP posts:
Selfsettling3 · 29/01/2020 10:56

I suspect it is normal. What is your job? Can you do some temp work? Do you have any savings? Can you take a mortgage break?

Look on Martin Lewis Money saving expert website on how to cut back.

SidneyPrescott · 29/01/2020 11:09

Thank you.

We have a fair amount in savings. Enough for about six to 10 months if we cut back.

I'm looking at temp and contract roles as well as permanent. I'm a Buyer.

I'VE GOT A NEW JOB!!!

I interviewed yesterday afternoon. The called an hour later offering me the job. Initially they were offering almost £6k less than I'm on so I asked if they could increase it. They've upped it to just £200 less a year, but with three extra days annual leave!

I did it!!!

GiveHerHellFromUs · 05/02/2020 18:24

That's amazing @SidneyPrescott! You don't let the grass grow - congrats!!!

GoodnightJude1 · 05/02/2020 18:28

Great news! Well done 💐

happyjack12 · 05/02/2020 18:30

congratulations!! :)

SidneyPrescott · 05/02/2020 18:31

I can't believe it. Honestly. The recruiter rang me after to ask how it went. I said I don't think I have the right skills they're looking for (it's something covered by my qualification but not something I have experience in) and she said "well, they thought it went really well and would like to offer you the job".

I had to stop myself from crying. It was a week ago to the hour, almost, that I was made redundant when they called.

Now, how do I get through the next three weeks of sitting at my desk being ignored with no work to do?

OP posts:
puds11 · 05/02/2020 18:34

Well done Flowers What a relief!

helpmum2003 · 05/02/2020 18:35

Congratulations!

Do some reading up on the skills you thought they were looking for, just in case
