Surely I can’t be the only one!? Blush, anyone else here who has never worked a 12 hour shift or done a night shift?? Every job I have had had been 8 hr days or less!! I think I would collapse if I had to do a night shift. My current hours date 9-2.40 but I leave at about 3 so I suppose you could say 9-3 with 40 mins of breaks!!

Me! Luckily I have always had jobs in office hours. I've had to work late occasionally for various events but have never done an overnighter. I think it would end me!

iklboo · 28/01/2020 19:23

Me - all my admin type jobs have never been on shift pattern. Usually 7 - 8 hour days only.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 28/01/2020 19:24

I did 12 hour shifts in a nursing home in the day time during my summer holidays from uni (many years ago!) I’ve never done a night shift though. I don’t sleep well at night so chances of me sleeping in the day are zero.

wheresthehope · 28/01/2020 19:25

Yes I have.
I did a season of foal watch on a thoroughbred stud in Australia.
The hours were 6pm till 6am.
It was very difficult trying to sleep during the day and a bit lonely at night but if there was a foal born it was lovely and got super busy.

aintnothinbutagstring · 28/01/2020 19:30

I do 10hr night shifts, I find they pass more quickly than when I've done 7/8hr days shifts, lots of night shift people say the same. I'm on my feet and constantly on the go though, it'd be murder to do a sit-down night shift, not sure how you'd stay awake.

Oohmegooliebird · 28/01/2020 19:31

Junior doctor in the late 1990s pre the introduction of shift work. 32-56 hour on calls. 1 in 4 rota. That was fun.

LuvMyBoyz · 28/01/2020 19:32

Ex teacher here so obviously I’ve worked the shortest days ever. But never done a night shift or 12 hours.

fluffedupferretonsteroids · 28/01/2020 19:32

Yeah lots. 12 hour shifts are the norm in the catering industry, have often done 16 hours.

FruityWidow · 28/01/2020 19:35

Ex pub landlord here. 18hr shifts were pretty normal for the weekends.

Cyw2018 · 28/01/2020 19:39

Paramedic here...12 hour shifts with average overrun of an hour, but this can vary from finishing on time to finishing 4 hours late (ie 16 hour shift). 30 minute unpaid break and a 20 minute paid break later in the shift if we're lucky. The latest I've had my 30 minute unpaid break was 5am on a 7pm to 7am shift!

I now work part time, days only as it was making me ill.

OP be grateful you've never had to do it, but don't go out of your way to seek out opportunisties to experience it!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 28/01/2020 19:40

I worked in tourism & hospitality for years, 16-18 hour days were normal in high season & i’ve done around a dozen 7pm-5am functions. You get used to it. The hardest thing I found with both types was remembering to eat/drink.

IndieTara · 28/01/2020 19:45

I used to be a Holiday Rep, very long hours and always on call

CMOTDibbler · 28/01/2020 19:45

When I was a student I worked as a nursing assistant in a psychiatric hospital. The normal rota was earlies, long, lates, but I would do as much over time as possible, so pretty much did long shifts everyday - which was 13 hours.

MigGril · 28/01/2020 19:46

I've done early mornings and late shifts, longest day was probably 10-11hours. We where doing 10hours days, 4 days on 3days off. But I have never worked a night shift, think I would die if I did as always needed my sleep.

bumblingbovine49 · 28/01/2020 19:46

No night shifts. I did work 12-18 hr days in an office job though, sometimes for weeks at a time, with weekend working as well. When I was younger and given large responsible projects to run with impossible deadlines . I was too young to say no. In my first job, I slept under the desk a few times ( hardly worth going home as I worked until 1-2am and would be back at my desk by 8am). The company regularly paid for me to go home by taxi ( £30+) as I lived quite a way from the office and sometimes had no way to get home and didn't want to sleep in the office two days in a row!!

It was absolutely exhausting but I learnt a massive amount . I did get fed up after a few years though and moved to a less stressful job eventually.

Mumof1andacat · 28/01/2020 19:47

I never have. Always worked in admin. Longest I've work 0830-1730 with an hour for lunch. Just about to start working as an HCA on a hospital ward so things are going to change....

HelenaJustina · 28/01/2020 19:49

I was doing 12hr night shifts 8pm-8am as a care assistant when I was in 6th form. It was tough but doing one shift a fortnight earned me the same as friends who did all day Sat and Sun in Boots or Next.

x2boys · 28/01/2020 19:50

Yeah loads when I was a nurse , night shifts were 7.30 pm to7.45 am and long days were 7.30 am to 7.45 pm we also has short days which were 8 hrs shifts Hmm,lots of people liked to do 3 long days in a row as it covered a full time working week .

Namechange8471 · 28/01/2020 19:50

Care worker here, 14 hour shifts, line worker so no break. Adults with various learning disabilities.

8am-10pm

It’s hard!

Namechange8471 · 28/01/2020 19:51

Lone worker not line worker!

Selfsettling3 · 28/01/2020 19:52

When teaching I would start at 8 or earlier and on parents evenings not finish until after 7. I’m not sure how coherent I was when talking to parents at that point.

KittenVsBox · 28/01/2020 19:54

Officially, no.
But there used to be a couple of days each year where I would start early, and finish late. Think my longest claim was 16 straight hours - and an 73hr week.

AnnaMariaDreams · 28/01/2020 19:57

Dentist. Longest day I have worked is 8.30- 7.30 with an hour for lunch.
These days 9-5 is enough for me!
Never done a night shift either, that’s why I didn’t do medicine!

kateybeth79 · 28/01/2020 19:58

I did night shifts in a casino, 9pm - 5am. Trouble is, I'd fall asleep as soon as I got home and then sleep for most of the next day, getting up just in time to get ready and get to work. It wasn't healthy for me at all and I became quite depressed

maddiemookins16mum · 28/01/2020 20:02

I remember when I was an Overseas rep and managed our arrivals desk at Faro airport from the first flight landing at 0940 in the morning until the last departure which was 0130 the next day (not including any delays etc). All done in court shoes too.
