What do you give your DC for tea when they are poorly

My 17mo DS has been sent home from nursery a bit under the weather and will be off for the next few days. It’s nothing serious, just a perfect storm of teething molars, a cold and a bit of an upset stomach.

My childhood was a bit rubbish, but I hear other people saying how their parents would give comforting foods and other special treats when they were young and off school etc, and it sounds so lovely.

So, what kind of things do you give your DC for tea when they are ill? And what other comforting things do you do? My DS was straight into his pyjamas and dressing gown and cuddled up on the sofa when we got home, and pancakes and fruit for tea, which seems to have lifted his spirits Smile

tin of Heinz tomato soup with chunky buttered bread Smile then i bring the bed covers down and a pillow and snuggle up on sofa and I have teens, hope your DS feels better soon.

When i was a child i was always sent to my aunts when ill as she was a SAHM and she always made me tom soup

Hot buttered toast or crumpets / english muffins, scrambled egg, soup, horlicks / ovaltine or similar to drink. My DC also randomly ask for mash when they're poorly.

Rice and scrambled egg, then a calm bath together rather than the usual bath time chaos, him in his pjs then we get a blanket out snuggle on the sofa and watch a few bits on TV together. If he’s particularly quiet I’ll go to bed when he does, but read etc once he’s asleep.

CherryPavlova · 28/01/2020 17:21

Agree with lots of above. Comfort food.
Crumpets
Tomato soup and toast
Drinking chocolate
Cheese on toast
Eggy bread
Banana loaf

Mum used to give us a teaspoonful of Marmite stirred up in hot water. A lovely, nourishing hot drink when we were feeling under the weather, especially with colds etc in the winter. I still love the taste and smell of Marmite now.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 28/01/2020 17:25

Boiled egg or Heinz tomato soup, Daddy would come home from work with a comic for me if I’d been off school Poorly.

Ohdeariedear · 28/01/2020 17:25

The ‘feeling ill’ routine at our house is basically snuggling up on the sofa under a duvet, lots of fluids and calpol and teeny tiny crustless sandwiches Eg 2 slices of bread, crusts off, cut into 4 or even 8, so that if they only manage a couple, you can wrap the rest up and try again later. Soup of they feel up to it. Yoghurt too. Basically anything that’s not much effort to eat. Hope he feels better soon!

Ah, these are so lovely!

Mummy's special soup - peppers, carrots, onions and a sweet potato all roasted, then simmered and liquidised - apparently has magical curative powers.

Now DD19 has left home and asked last week for the recipe.

GreenTulips · 28/01/2020 17:33

Scrabbles egg
Toast
Crumpets
Banana with bread and butter
Ice cream or custard
Cake

Anything they want usually!

recreationalcalpol · 28/01/2020 17:34

I can see that I’m going to have to make some soup tonight!

Beans and toast and a cup of tea or hot lemon and honey.

turkeyboots · 28/01/2020 17:37

Chicken noodle soup and bread. Soup is a theme!

MunsteadWood · 28/01/2020 17:37

Boiled egg and buttery bread or toast
Fish fingers with tomato ketchup
Jelly!

AdaColeman · 28/01/2020 17:38

Egg-in-a-cup with buttered bread fingers if you could manage them.
Soup (consommé) or broth in a large cup, with plain toast to dip in.
Homemade rice pudding.
Milk jelly.
Fairy bread.
Sponge fingers or madeleines with jam.
Chicken in white sauce with plain boiled rice ~ you knew you no longer at death’s door when you got this!
Steamed plaice fillet ~ done with a knob of butter, between two plates over a large saucepan of simmering water, yes, you were definitely going to get better! Smile

MunsteadWood · 28/01/2020 17:39

I still crave some variation of these foods whenever I am ill now

Mabelface · 28/01/2020 17:40

Heinz tomato soup and cheese on toast.

HalfBloodPrincess · 28/01/2020 17:40

My mum used to let me have a sugar or 100s and 1000s sandwich, like molly molly mandy had Grin

Shockers · 28/01/2020 17:42

I’m reading this because I’m just on the right side of a migraine which had an explosive effect on my stomach.

I’m hungry now!

mindutopia · 28/01/2020 17:44

If it’s just a cold or teething, I’d offer the same things I was planning to offer anyway. I only cook one meal and that’s what there is, though if they didn’t eat much I’d offer more fruit or a cup of milk or something after.

If it was a tummy bug, I usually offer toast or porridge or plain buttered pasta.

No treats though, just mostly normal foods though unless they are likely to be vomiting.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 28/01/2020 17:44

My mum used to say if I was off school I was too ill to do anything (no tv) and too ill to eat properly. Got dry toast and marmite (which I do now like!)

Definitely of the dont spoil them or they'd want to fake it for time off generation!

So I dont have those memories. My kids usually get duvets in the living room with tv and normal food (i still steer clear of sweet stuff, must be in my head!)

GameSetMatch · 28/01/2020 17:47

Pillow and duvet on the sofa, little side table pulled up to the sofa to put his drink on, the drink is always orange juice to up the vitamin C (unless being sick) and whatever they fancy to eat one of mine always asks for coconut sticky rice with pineapple the other usually tomato soup and fresh bread and croutons.

Lordfrontpaw · 28/01/2020 17:47

I always like buttered toast or rice pudding if I’m not vomity. Digestive biscuits too.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 28/01/2020 17:49

My kids all like different things.
DD12 has always likes minestrone soup with crusty bread. She will have it for all 3 meals. She likes to lie in her bed watching easy-to-watch dvds. Lots of orange juice to hand. As soon as she sneezes my DP gets to chopping vegetables ready to make huge batch of soup.

DD6 likes watermelon and tinned sliced peaches. She drinks apple juice. She prefers to lie on sofa with a stack of colouring books and gel pens.

DD3, she will change what she fancies. She never really takes to the sofa or bed. She does look the saddest when she is poorly though.

We also have a 'poorly' blanket. It is actually my slanket that was bought for me cos I am always cold. When my kids are ill they steal it off me because it is the 'nicest blanket ever'
When I have suggested I buy them all their own, they say no, they like my one. Must be a comfort 'mummy's blanket' type thing
