What do you give your DC for tea when they are poorly

My 17mo DS has been sent home from nursery a bit under the weather and will be off for the next few days. It’s nothing serious, just a perfect storm of teething molars, a cold and a bit of an upset stomach.

My childhood was a bit rubbish, but I hear other people saying how their parents would give comforting foods and other special treats when they were young and off school etc, and it sounds so lovely.

So, what kind of things do you give your DC for tea when they are ill? And what other comforting things do you do? My DS was straight into his pyjamas and dressing gown and cuddled up on the sofa when we got home, and pancakes and fruit for tea, which seems to have lifted his spirits Smile

When I was a child it was cheese or marmite on toast cut in to fingers or jacket potato with just butter and a bit of salt accompanied by original lucozade. Eaten under a duvet on the sofa by a roaring coal fire and daytime TV. Columbo saw me through many bouts of Tonsillitis!

My kids like soup- leek and potato or minestrone.
Toast with butter and honey, jam or marmite,
Cutted up fruit,
Smoothies,
Yoghurts.

Tinned tomato soup and Ritz crackers
Mashed potato with a bit of gravy
Fresh white buttered bread

PoohBearsHole · 28/01/2020 18:20

Boiled egg and soldiers
Mashed banana
Marmite toast
Being put in my parents bed with the pillows specially put into an A. 3 pillows - the base with the two almost upright to make an A - good to snuggle into.

Boiled egg and toast soldiers is my poorly food
DH’s is tinned ambrosia rice pudding
DS gets both of these.

theThreeofWeevils · 28/01/2020 18:27

I used to be given steamed lemon sole Envy and baked egg custard Envy.

Both excellent deterrents to malingering.

Standrewsschool · 28/01/2020 18:29

Jelly and icecream

iklboo · 28/01/2020 18:31

Mum used to make me a beefburger sun:

Beef burger in the middle of the plate
Crinkle cut chips round the outside for rays
Tinned spaghetti hair
Face made of cut up cucumber & tomato

Nana made me 'prem' (luncheon meat), real chips & spaghetti

DS(14) usually wants tomato soup and a cheese toastie

I have leftover chicken and stock from the mythical mumsnet Sunday roast chicken, so I’m definitely doing chicken soup for him to have tomorrow!

My Mum would bring my duvet and pillow down and make me Heinz tomato soup, buttered bread and a big glass of milk. I still have that now if i feel poorly! 😊

Walkon · 28/01/2020 18:48

We got toast and a boiled egg and lucozade that came in an orange cellophane wrapper.

Fish fingers and chips
Pasta and chopped up hot dogs
Tomato soup and bread or toast

Duvet on the sofa and usually a pyjama day too!

Mine was always a few days on the sofa under a duvet with whatever meds needed, my mum would alway go to the shop and bring back a chocolate bar and an activity magazine for me to read, and keep me occupied. In terms of food she just face me all of my favourite foods were or whatever I was craving as such.

Myshitisreal · 28/01/2020 18:58

WorldEndingFire · 28/01/2020 19:00

My 17 month old loves weetabix when she’s teething and completely off food. I try not to give her anything too treat like if she’s not had her proper meal as she’s a bit of a madam and likely to play on it.

For me, it was always angel delight or cereal.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/01/2020 19:58

Cuppy eggs and toast.

Stravapalava · 28/01/2020 21:13

Just remembered ready brek. Stir some honey or golden syrup in (or hot chocolate powder like my DM!). Apple & blackcurrant (sometimes served warm) on the side.

Gilead · 28/01/2020 21:16

I used to make home made vegetable soup or scrambled egg on toast. They still want them when they’re poorly and the youngest are 23!

Notso · 28/01/2020 21:26

the pillows specially put into an A. 3 pillows - the base with the two almost upright to make an A - good to snuggle into.
Yes! So comfy, this is how I have the pillows when DH is working away Smile

FromTheAllotment · 28/01/2020 21:38

Me: Toast and Bovril
My DC don’t really have poorly food, they seem to be either completely off their meals or else keen for whatever they usually have. But if I feel like they’re in need of a pick me up I do them tinned fruit and yoghurt with broken up chocolate buttons “hidden” under the yoghurt.

Oh and at 17mo they both would have turned their noses up at being served some new savoury dish when they were ill... OP I am slightly worried you’ll spend ages making amazing soup and he might refuse to taste the end result!

Dd nearly always lost her appetite when she was off colour as a toddler, so anything she wanted. Normally strawberries.

When she and dsd were school age, it always seemed to be cheese and crumpets or toasties cut into fun shapes, followed by strawberries and ice cream. Always downstairs in a special blanket with favourite cuddly toy, comfort books and favourite tv/ film.

Dsd is in her second term at uni, and unearthed a DVD player to take back after Xmas along with a few favourites that aren't available elsewhere, and a pastry cutter because apparently it's not the same if she's ill without them. I presume she hasn't yet found a housemate she is willing to ask to read Mallory towers out loud to her for the 400th time for full nostalgia.

Dd, age 16 does exactly the same at home still if she's under the weather.
