Bloody bloody Apple!

I've got a very old iPad, around 8 years old.

It was working ok, just a bit slow. I had Netflix and Amazon prime apps on it which worked ok.

I took it into the Apple store recently for advice about the speed. They said they would do a factory reset to try and improve it. They warned me I would lose things like photos (didn't have many on there anyway) and I would have to re-download my apps. I agreed to this.

However when I tried to re-download Netflix and Prime, it wasn't possible as the software wasn't compatible or something. I've been on the phone to them and they said there is nothing they can do as it's a 'vintage' iPad.

I said if they'd warned me that I wouldn't be able to use Netflix or Prime any more I wouldn't have agreed to the reset.

If you are using the same Apple ID you should be able to download the last compatible version. I've done this on an old iPhone for my kids.

twosoups1972 · 28/01/2020 16:48

Yes same Apple ID, it doesn't work. Apple have said it's not possible now

Do you have a backup on a computer you can restore from?

twosoups1972 · 28/01/2020 22:21

Nope @time

Is there the old version of the app in your computer trash?

Shoxfordian · 29/01/2020 07:38

Its pretty rubbish that they didn't tell you that your apps may not work. Make a complaint but there's probably not much they can do
I also have an ancient ipad, doesn't do updates anymore, probably on its last legs

twosoups1972 · 29/01/2020 14:40

@TimeForAParty do you mean on the iPad? I will check.

Surely it's their mistake and they have to put me back to where I was before??

That's not on Apple, I'm afraid. That's the app providers failing to allow you to download the older versions.

Netflix and Amazon have themselves decided to take down their older versions from the App Store. Shout at them.

RustyBear · 29/01/2020 15:06

You should be able to watch Netflix and Amazon Prime via Safari on your iPad

cuckooken · 29/01/2020 15:19

Just use the browser?

twosoups1972 · 29/01/2020 15:41

I tried the browser for Amazon Prime but when I clicked to play it took me straight to the app which didn't work!

OP posts:
twosoups1972 · 29/01/2020 15:42

Haven't tried the browser for Netflix yet...

RustyBear · 29/01/2020 15:42

If you delete the app, it won't try to go there

cuckooken · 29/01/2020 15:43

How can it take you to the app if you couldn't re download the app?

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 29/01/2020 15:50

I have an old iPad, about 9 years old, fb messenger hasn't worked for a couple years and fb no longer works as the iOS is too old and can no longer be updated. They should have told you I store the speed is because of the outdated iOS, there isn't a fix for that

twosoups1972 · 29/01/2020 15:51

Sorry for confusion @cuckooken the Prime app seemed to download ok but doesn't work. The Netflix app can't be downloaded at all.

OP posts:
twosoups1972 · 29/01/2020 15:52

Yes they should have told me @SheSaidNoFuckThat I wouldn't have agreed to the reset! Both Netflix and Prime were working before, albeit slowly

Agree with others, not Apple's fault, it's the fault of the owners of the apps that have taken down the old versions

Just use the website on the ipad instead

twosoups1972 · 29/01/2020 15:53

I think it IS Apple's fault - they should have warned me. They told me I could just re-download my apps!

Try this

DrDreReturns · 29/01/2020 17:44

The developers of the apps will think it's not worth maintaining them for older versions of iOS as not many people use them. Idk about apple but I develop stuff for Android and if you stop supporting an older version of the operating system people can't get older versions of your app easily.
The only thing I can suggest is contacting the companies who produce the apps directly, but I wouldn't be hopeful about getting it resolved.
