Where do I start with buying speakers? I'm clueless

I'd like to buy some for dhs birthday. I don't know where to start and obviously I can't ask him.

They are predominantly for one room - the TV is in a corner. We currently have a pair of wired speakers that are ok, but not great. They connect into our Denon ceol n9

I think what we want is a set of four so we get surround sound without having to turn it up so much we annoy the neighbours. It would be great if they were little and maybe portable (but not essential)

I don't even know what budget I'm looking at. Confused

Not portable, but I can highly recommend Sonos.

It's incredibly easy to set up and control from your phone.

One Sonos Beam for under the tv and two Sonos One speakers either side of the room. Probably just under £1k.

I second Sonos. You can get a portable Sonos (move)

I currently have PLAYBAR, 2 Sonos 1s and a 5 in my living room so have surround sound. You can get the beam for cheaper, I only went with the playbar as I got an excellent offer when I was in store, the bar would have done just fine. Sonos 1 in kitchen, and a 3 in bedroom. Next is the move so I can listen outside in the nicer weather.

Thanks :) Ouch!

Would I be able to connect from the Denon to the Sonos?

and we can disable Alexa right? I wouldn't want to invite her into my living room.

I have a Sonos One and a Denon but they are not linked. From what I understand you need another Sonos device, a Connect I think to do it. I’ve also heard the results aren’t great. Google is your friend here.

If you just want to use it for the TV could you invest in a new set up. If it has to go through the Denon receiver then I think wired speakers are your best bet. First check how many terminals you have on the back. Mine only has terminals for one pair of speakers, although I can have a sub woofer as well. I have my Denon linked to the TV via optical cable, then the sound running through my wired Keffs.

What speakers do you have currently? If we don’t know what you’ve got atm it’s hard to advise.

The problem with Sonos is that they stop supporting them to force you to upgrade, and offer trade-in deals to lock you in.
We ended up going for Edifier instead, although we were looking for good quality Bluetooth speakers rather than a surround sound system.

My current speakers are a pair of wired Sharp speakers. Just normal ones.

We use the Denon for listening to the radio a bit and for playing CDs sometimes. He has a lot of cds. I also cast stuff to it from my phone. It has space only for one pair of wired speakers.

Would decent speakers help with the fact that everyone mumbles on tv?

I'll have a look at those Baroness. Thanks!

They aren’t great speakers tbh. You’re probably better off investing in a new pair of wired speakers. Your denon is capable of a lot more than you’re getting with those speakers and a better pair would improve clarity.

Have you got a Richer Sounds near you? They’re great at advising you for your budget.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/01/2020 19:37

Thank you, that's really helpful :) I'll have a look and see if there is one nearby.

They can’t stop the mumbling on the telly, unfortunately, or the sound going up during the adverts.

damn.

I am going to go for decent wired speakers and a subwoof. Much less complicated...

Just wanted to say, thanks for Richer Sounds recommendation. We went today. They were so helpful! They stuck to a sensible budget, listened carefully to our requirements and then price matched when I found that a competitor had a sale on. I'm really happy with our new set up.
