Advice ...DD Constantly Coughing/Clearing throat

Hi All,

1st time posting and needing advice...my DD is constantly coughing or trying to clear her throat. This has been going on for nearly a month. Thought at 1st just a dry cough so tried over the counter medicine to no avail. Been to doctors they are trying her out on a blue inhaler with spacer but that doesn’t seem to be doing anything. We have another appointment next week with asthma nurse to review it. Also doing a peak flow chart to monitor that. Not sure if it’s allergy related if not asthma they are going to do allergy test... I also thought a possibility of vocal tic but doc wasn’t convinced. Has anyone else had similar?? Poor thing coughing all the time. Only time not coughing is when DD is sleeping.

Hi we had exactly the same. Tried the blue inhaler, talked about asthma etc etc turned out to be the start of about 3 years of different tics. They only seemed to reduced when I introduced magnesium as a supplement. Hoping it turns out to be just a lengthy cough for you

No advice for children but this is me! It has improved hugely since I've been put on a brown inhaler twice a day and use my blue one before exercise.

I pass the peak flow readings with flying colours mostly but my asthma is allergy triggered so I'm also on a decent antihistamine. When it's triggered my cough is relentless, non stop and since having babies definitely takes it's toll on my pelvic floor at the end of the day! And pisses my husband off sometimes Grin

It is alway much worse for a few weeks after a bad virus though.

Hope that helps.

My DS occasionally has tics and one of those is him making a coughing sound like he's clearing his throat. We don't do anything about it and it eventually goes away

Sounds like tic. Dd did it. We ignored it to start with but it got much worse. We point it out now and she can now work on stopping it. She was dx with OCD and anxiety. It progressed to other more obvious things (getting both feet off floor, lifting bottom off chair etc).

Thanks All. I mentioned tic to the doctor but wasn’t convinced at all. Wanted to rule asthma route out 1st then will do allergy tests. It is constant ....I looked into the magnesium supplement and just bought some today. Will see what doc says when we go back. School have also commented on the persistent cough too.

If once everything else is ruled out and you do think it may be tic related magnesium may well help. At first I thought the reduction of tics and the magnesium supplement was purely coincidental but I really do notice a huge difference. We use the Floradix liquid magnesium. Tiredness also increases the tics. We were told by paediatitions not to draw attention to them, which I found hard to do. 3 years down the line they are there occasionally but barely noticeable. Hope you get to the bottom of it.
