Ok this is bothering irrationally ๐Ÿ˜‚ On DOI Phil and Holly are announcing couples who are through to next week and they say โ€˜the next couple through IS...Joe and Alexโ€™ ...every time I hear it I want to correct them...โ€™the next couple through ARE...Joe and Alexโ€™
Itโ€™s ARE not IS surely, because itโ€™s plural?

Couple is singular. They are correct. One couple is, two couples are!

Sorry Blush

Sparklingbrook · 26/01/2020 20:02

I thought 'IS' was correct.

smemorata · 26/01/2020 20:05

Both are acceptable.

Grohlette · 26/01/2020 20:06

I know what you mean by one couple is singular but theyโ€™re announcing two names so sounds like it should be plural to me

Itโ€™s a collective noun and both are acceptable. It allows for nuance depending on what youโ€™re trying to emphasise:
