If you were a teacher and you were meant to be accompanying a school trip (exchange) to Shanghai in 6 weeks, would you go?

GreenTulips · 25/01/2020 15:46

SmellMySmellbow · 25/01/2020 15:47

Eek, tricky. No, prob not. Is the trip def going ahead?

No I wouldn't. Wouldn't want DC to go either.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 25/01/2020 15:47

Won't be too keen, TBH.

theweebleshavelanded · 25/01/2020 15:48

china`s a big place....

I`d be erring on a no tbh.

theweebleshavelanded · 25/01/2020 15:48

IF I did go, I`d be looking at what the virus is, how its spread, incubation period etc etc.

sunshinesupermum · 25/01/2020 15:49

Under the circumstances not currently. Is the exchange trip still going ahead?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 25/01/2020 15:49

Not a chance! Surely the school will be considering cancelling?

theweebleshavelanded · 25/01/2020 15:50

mmm shanghai to wuhan is about 430 ish miles.

cooldarkroom · 25/01/2020 15:52

No way

SmellMySmellbow · 25/01/2020 15:53

@theweebleshavelanded it's no longer just in Wuhan.

FarquarKumquatsmama · 25/01/2020 15:54

Thanks for the impressions. I tend to feel the same. No word from school management yet. Teacher in charge of trip wants to go regardless of concerns. I think the chance of us catching the virus is fairly low. The chance of us ending up in hospital because a student has a sore throat and become hysterical that he or she has the virus is fairly high. Torn between going with my gut feeling and not wanting to let my colleague down.

TokyoSushi · 25/01/2020 15:55

No... I suppose they'll do a suitable assessment though, surely they wouldn't let the kids go either if it wasn't safe?

theweebleshavelanded · 25/01/2020 15:56

oh. that changes things then!

be a nope!

Cohle · 25/01/2020 16:01

Presumably if the situation deteriorates the FCO travel advice will change and the trip will have to be cancelled?

I wouldn't really expect a school to cancel a trip unless the FCO advice changed, not least because insurance probably won't pay out unless that's the case.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/01/2020 16:06

I wouldn't want to go and I wouldn't want my child to go.

Ginbauble · 25/01/2020 16:12

In 6 weeks the situation may be different so I'd review and risk assess nearer the time tbh.

Even if there's v low risk of catching the virus I agree that there could be a high risk of kids feeling a bit under the weather and thinking they do have the virus- or is it just my DCs friends are a bit dramatic?!

keyboardwarrior1 · 25/01/2020 16:13

I would follow FCO advice which will be updated as the situation develops.

Insurance companies are unlikely to pay out unless FCO advise against all but essential travel to an area.

MrsKCastle · 25/01/2020 16:14

I wouldn't want to go. I wouldn't be surprised if the FCO issues advice against non-essential travel to China before the 6 weeks is up.

MrsKCastle · 25/01/2020 16:15

As well as the risks of catching the virus, there's the possibility of finding yourself under quarantine conditions, and/or finding that tourist attractions are closed anyway.

Southmouth · 25/01/2020 16:17

No I definitely wouldn’t or I wouldn’t let my child go either.

samlovesdilys · 25/01/2020 16:17

Chinese education bureau has banned all of their students travelling abroad (our exchange was cancelled on Friday) so guessing they may ban it...

lljkk · 25/01/2020 16:20

If decision had to be made today then I would plan to go, but I bet the school will cancel the trip anyway, so decision out of hands.
Wuhan & Shanghai are only 700 km apart.
Reminds me that DS has mate with relatives in Shanghai. I hope they will be ok.

AbsentmindedWoman · 25/01/2020 16:28

No, I wouldn’t like to go as a teacher, and not a mum yet but wouldn’t want my kid to go. School are unwise if they go imo.
