Everyday crockery that won't be discontinued

Very exciting topic! Grin

We've got nice special occasion crockery thanks to getting married. However we need some for every day.

Problem is we have small children plus we are a bit clumsy so we want something that you can buy individually (when we inevitably break a plate), and also that isn't just going to be around for a couple of years then stop being made (like my M&S pasta bowls). Also we don't want to spend a fortune, this is just for every day use.

Please can anyone offer any good suggestions?

Thanks

Denby gets my vote too. As well as our Halo set I have some pieces from my childhood going back nearly 50 years.
If you live near a Boundary Mill they stock Denby at reduced prices. They are usually seconds but the pattern flaw is usually tiny and once you have food on your plate who's going to see?

SallyWD · 26/01/2020 08:39

I get Denby from TKMaxx. Huge discounts!

BessMarvin · 26/01/2020 08:40

I do love Emma Bridgewater... But I do think I'm tending toward the idea of Denby white or supermarket white, or a mix of them both!

I know you said that it was your pasta bowls in m and s that were discontinued, but m and s has been selling Maxim for years. I know as mine is ten years old and wasn’t a new range then and they’re still selling it. It is porcelain and white. Very reasonably priced. I do try and keep 10-12 of everything just in case (and we are only a family of four).

WellTidy · 26/01/2020 08:45

And M and s is doing 20% off home wear at the moment.

Cornishware. We have the blue stripe. They do seconds sales quite often.

Notonthestairs · 26/01/2020 09:50

Never heard of Cornishware but I've just googled and turns out I have an old set of their egg cups from my grandparents! I love the colours.

SistersOfPercy · 26/01/2020 10:14

I managed to use clubcard points over the black Friday sale at Denby (initially Tesco said they couldn't be used over that weekend but they continued the sale into the Tuesday morning and the site accepted them). £200 of white Denby for £5 p&p
Spent a week convinced they would never honour it but they did.

Motherofmonsters · 26/01/2020 11:30

Another vote for Cornishware, ours are lasting really well and I usually ask for a new item to be added at Christmas. This year I got the biscuit tin so we all match.

You can get seconds that only have a tiny blemish for cheaper to

I've had the same set since I was 18 (38 now) and it's complete still because due to an ordering mishap I bought two full 32 piece sets. When one breaks I unwrap a replacement from storage to keep my cupboard numbers at 8 of each. Denby sounds like it's a good sturdy brand but whatever happens, buying extra is a great idea if you can afford and can store two or more sets. Almost everything will be discontinued eventually I'm afraid so this is the nearest I've come to being able to keep the same lot for 20 years.

AJPTaylor · 26/01/2020 12:01

I just wait until white crockery is reduced in Sainsbos and buy 12 Of everything. Last lot the plates were reduced to 2 quid each. I put 8 in the cupboard to use and 4 in the garage as spares. Works well for us! I bought cereal bowls 5 years ago and only now are they looking tired enough to be replaced.

BessMarvin · 26/01/2020 12:20

WellTidy I do love a 20% off!

Ikea seem to make the same stuff for ages. I don't like their thin white stuff that's like glass though. No grip on the bottom so it slides around and really sharp and dangerous when it breaks.

IloveJudgeJudy · 26/01/2020 12:27

I would say just buy white. Doesn't matter if it doesn't match exactly, just don't mix China and pottery. I have 2 different sets, but that's what I'd do if I had my time over.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 26/01/2020 12:31

Burleigh Asiatic Pheasant. We have it in the blue. Sturdy enough for everyday yet beautiful for dinner parties.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/01/2020 12:35

We have Denby Imperial Blue. Some of it is 17 years old this year. Some of it is seconds (but you'd only know by looking at the bottom) and some isn't.

We use it daily and it goes in the dishwasher every day too. It hasn't chipped and is fantastic stuff.

We only have one set of crockery though. There is no 'best' set as well!

Pipandmum · 26/01/2020 12:40

I just bought two of the boxed sets from Sainsbury's in wavy white and I'll go get a third. Thing is I know they'll stop making it so maybe I'll get a fourth set!
It has a bit of a rustic feel but would go in contemporary or classic setting.

We're on our second lot of Denby. The first was over 30 years old and discontinued many years ago. It was robust and fine in the dishwasher.
Recently we bought the dark blue edged Denby (Imperial Blue?) but have been very disappointed as about half the plates have chipped. The dishes are fine, as are the mugs.

PearlsPerils · 27/01/2020 19:30

Like a PP I bought Denby (about £400 worth!) with Tesco club card points. I got a mixture of halo and halo coupe and it sort of coordinates with the Denby Jet Black and Jet Grey I had already.
Even if a style is discontinued, there's sure to be plenty on eBay.

TheCraicDealer · 27/01/2020 19:55

We got two plain white 12 piece sets (plates, side plates and bowls) from Waitrose which we supplemented with their pasta bowls in the same style. They don't seem to do the boxed sets on the website anymore but you can buy the items individually. We've had a few breakages (my fault!) and never had an issue getting replacements. Well, I say that, but as we have no Waitroses in NI I have to wait until we're visiting the in-laws to pick some up! DH originally wanted something with a pattern [shudder] but I refused on the basis that it dates easily and we'd end up with Frankencrockery after a few years when we couldn't find replacements.

I have an irrational dislike of Denby but that's mostly because it reminds me of my first job in 'home hard' in Debenhams!
